Bottle Dump 2nd Trip

Sgt. Silverman

Active member
Since my E2 didn't come in this week I decided to go back to the bottle dump with my Christian buddy. We jumped right back on the spot where we were pulling the medicine bottles out and we dug, and Mike you're right, the deeper we dug the older they got! I was ankle deep in mud and clay when I saw the coke bottle and the year "23" on the side. I was so excited... and then I pulled it out and it was missing the bottom. Is this what bottle diggers call a "cryer"? If it is, I think I just experienced my first one! Lisa or Mike (or anyone else for that matter than digs for bottles) since I was able to recover the bottom, can this be glued and with what type of glue? I don't want to sell it, I just want to display it.

We found some really cool bottles (I didn't get a chance to clean all of them, just some of the ones in the pic) and while I was digging I spied what I thought to be a half dollar. What it appears to be is a US. Navy dog tag with the inscription: "- KURT - I belong to Lt. R. L. Strickler U.S. Navy". I did a little research and it seems he was a pilot during WWII. Now, I know many of you are great at how to hunt down a person, I unfortunately have never found anything where I've had to contact the person. Where do I begin if I want to return this dog tag to the family?

Thanks for looking everyone, Godspeed, God Bless and HH!

Greg

Yes you can glue them. I will find out what type of glue. I think that is an actual animal dog tag? Probably was on the dog so it would be returned to his owner.

That makes more sense, thanks Mike. Looking forward to gluing up that bottle too. Thanks for the help.

Greg and Mike,
One of my duties, in the U.S. Army, was Military Police Dog Platoon - 1st Cav.. I was stationed in Korea and later on my unit went to Viet Nam to become part of Air Cav. Indeed we had tags, on our dogs, but ours weren't made of metal. Metal tags would 'sound off' as the dog ran through the bush and it would alert the enemy. The U.S. Air Forse & Navy had metal tags, on their dogs, but the Army & Marines didn't (of the ones I've seen anyway). My enlistment was from 1964-68. The military may have changed policy later on. I tend to think the tag you've found in from the WWII.

Thanks for the heads up Martin. I find it odd that the tag has his military info, unless like you said, his dog could have been used as a military dog, either that or he lived on post (or off) and had this dog Kurt. First time I've ever found a dog tag so I have no clue. (Like that wasn't apparent! :lmfao:) Martin, I too was in Korea. I was with the 2nd ID back in 91'. Thank you for your service and God Bless!

Greg

Yep, you can glue it if you have all the pieces and can make them fit.

Al at the detector shop is a big bottle guy and says that he is 99% sure that a guy he knows who repairs them uses super glue.

I have used Gorilla Glue and Super Glue.
