Bottlecap rejectoin & sov gt

Ok I have had this thing a week and have found something to complain about. Its hot on bottle caps! I cant even completely disc out bottle caps no matter where I set the disc or notch and dont/cant really be running disc in the field anyways by most everyone's recommendations.

Here is something I discovered tonight while air testing. When running various caps left to right across the coil the cap will sound off and some of them sounding vary much like gold rings I air test. Now raise the discrimination to about three and run the cap front to back of the coil. In the field this would be like pushing a vacume cleaner away and then pulling back toward you. Cap does not sound off but nulls while all other metals I have tested sound off just as if it where a left to right, right to left sweep.

You dont even really need to raise the discrimination to three when doing this but cap may produce a short click or pop if you don't while all other metals produce the same tone as a left to right sweep.

Have only tried this with an air test. I sure hope it works the same in the field with covered items.

Murphy,I have never had problems with bottle caps old or the new screw ons.I usually get a 175 on the meter and if the park or site is really littered with screw caps I'll disregard this number that usually profiles the unwanted trash. There is a chance some good targets could be passed over but the hunt isn't stalled out with these unwanted caps. The discriminate and notch is at the lowest setting so I can see all the targets in a trashy site and cherry pick the numbers that have a higher probability for a good find. Very seldom will I get a cap with a 180 reading.

Sounds pretty interesting Murph. I'm curious as to how your theory will work in the field. Be sure to keep us posted and I also will try your technique.(I hate bottle caps)

My experience with the Sov XS and crown caps was that they sometimes did sound good enough to dig.

With a meter though I could tell the crown caps were just that because the meter would jump from high negative to high positive and back while sweeping the coil over one.

What can I say, I'm a sucker for a farty low-tone! Be careful about discing those out though, you could miss some gold. Look at the bright side, ferrous iron is no longer something you have to deal with. This is like being on vacation, after using a PI! OBTW, that was a 9 hour water hunt on Sunday from 430P-130A Monday morning! See Beach and Water for more details!

Now on the alum screw caps you cant disc them out or notch them out, but this is where the meter will help get rid of most. Now the older crown caps the Sovereign will null out or not get a repeatable tones, but have had a few fool me when it is very dry as they will sound like a deep nickle. Now some of the newer crown caps will give a signal, but just don't quite sound as nice as a coin or gold ring, but sometime you just got to dig them as they are just too iffy. The detector I have been using that really loves rusty bottle caps is the Fisher F-75, but then again every Fisher I have used loves them for us up here in ND.

The crown caps on the left in hunters first pic are the ones I am talking about and are the predominant nuisance item for me when hunting the wet. Thankfully the pull tabs and can slaw is minimum so I am not to bothered by them to much at my beaches unless I venture up into the fluffy stuff.

My hunts generally go three hours or so and I am averaging about half that many crown caps. Problem is I have a few thin 14k men's bands that produce tone almost exactly like these crown caps with the only difference being the rings will produce the same tone front to back of coil while caps will not produce tone or null front to back if you are running a audible threshold . Attempts at discrimination only serves to confuse matters producing varying degrees of broken tones over the caps and rings so that's out for me to. I have had detectors with VDIs and when it comes down to it I don't trust them either. I have no meter for my sov. Maybe the sov meters are more reliable than the ones I have used in the past.

The sov does seem to have a pretty narrow band of disc for pull tabs. I can eliminated about 80 percent of them while still leaving a tone for a nickel and all the gold rings I have air tested. I could see this coming in handy toward the end of hunts when fatigue is setting in and I am not quite as willing to dig it all but not quite ready to call it a day either.
