i'm pretty sure these guys were melting these down at this site to make bullets, because marc and i sure did find a bunch of these things along with gardner bullets.
here's the one i found yesterday.
it says:
"Aquia Creek" on one side, and
"Mears & Houlton Balto. Pat. 1857" on the other.
marc was kind enough to send me this info on it:
"In 1842 the RF&P was completed to Aquia Creek. From there cargo and passengers were put on steamboats run by the Washington and Potomac Steamboat Co to Washington. In 1872 the bridge was built across aquia creek and rails were laid to Washington and the Aquia Creek station was bypassed and closed forever. That seal you found today is a piece of long forgotten history."
