Brass knife hand forged

Ferrous

New member
Went to deer camp in the top part of the thumb of Michigan. I was perplexed when I realized that this was brass. My buddy's dad said when he bought the place in the 60's he had an old late 1800's home torn down and replaced it with a trailer. This farm's deed does go back to the early 1800's as a working farm. We dont know anything the previous farm because of the fire that passed through northern Michigan. We were thinking it could be European. many farmers that settled there were of German descent. I found it about 7-8 inches down. it is 7.25" long. The edge is very dull and almost like it never had a sharp edge. I was just wondering if anybody may know more.

Thanks, Eric

I meant copper culture but the shape is not qiute right and it looks more modern. So it may not be.

Thanks Taz, That was interesting reading. It's funny how we think right away, Europe, when the Superior Basin was so flush with copper! Thanks for the info! It has no evidence of mallot marks and is not pure copper it has to be brass. very cool find none the less.

Now those Celtics are old!

I just talked with my buddy, he said the brass knife is 1/4 inch thick. We are starting to think that it is not that old, probably homemade out of flat stock. I found and old 1940's toy truck near it and a reign bell around the same depth of 6".
