Possible fracture in his left leg.
Posted 8 hours ago
This morning Carol tried to wake Brian up because he had fallen asleep with two of his games running. She didn't want to turn them off without asking him first in case he needed to save the games.
Brian was in such a deep sleep that he jerked violently and hurt his left leg. He said it hurts right above the knee, but only when he moves it. I don't see any obvious signs of fracture and don't feel any hot spots that would indicate a fracture so hopefully it is just a muscle pull.
I called his hospice nurse and she said to be on the safe side she wants to have it x-rayed. My first thought was that we would need to call an ambulance because I can no longer lift him.
But, she said they will send a mobile x-ray machine here to the house saving us a trip to the ER.
I'll keep you posted.
Thanks for your prayers!

We are waiting to hear the official report from the radiologist but I've seen enough fractures to say that it is broken in the middle of the femur. Our home hospice nurse came by to help immobilize his leg until we hear the official report and decide the next step.
The brace we used is one that he had from a previous femur break and we fortunately saved it for future use if needed.
So, the options right now are just continue to use the immobilizer for a couple of weeks and go to Knoxville Orthopedic Clinic (KOC) for a follow-up x-ray or KOC may want to replace the rods in his femur. He has outgrown the rods he has now and they need to be replaced with larger ones but that is a surgery that neither Brian or us want. Plus, there may not be a benefit from it since he no longer walks.
We will just have to wait and see what they say. In the meantime we'll manage his pain the best we can and make him as comfortable as possible.
I could be totally wrong about the fracture but based on what I have seen in the past I'm 99% sure it is.
We'll update as soon as we know more.
Thank you,

It is fractured.

The radioligists report confirmed the fracture and the report has been faxed to KOC. Brian's orthopedist will get back with us tomorrow after he reads the report.
Here we go again.
Thanks for your prayers!
