Broken Coil Tabs

New member
Hello

I have an explorer 2 with the 1000 and a 1050 coil.

The coil "ears" , / tabs on coil that attach to the lower rod have Cracked /Broken off. Glue does not seem to work .

Any Ideas or fixes for this?

Can I fix the coil or somehow attach broken coil to rod ?

Thanks.

Man, that is a tough one to try and fix. Epoxy might work, but not sure how long it will last. How in the heck did you crack or break those tabs off? Pre-moulded plastics are really hard to fix. I broke the left side of my headphones and used epoxy and so far they are still holding together, but not sure about your coil. They take a lot of pounding and banging into stuff, so don't know if epoxy will hold up or not. GL on whatever you decide to try.

its possible, but complicated. buy fiberglass and epoxy resin and play with it. exist possibility that first time you will end all in epoxy :stretcher:, but dont give up. good luck Stasys

i have used jb weld in some hard to fix jobs with great success. clean,. rough up the surface a little .
put a generous amount not just where the break is , but encase the entire weak part let it dry , will be as good as new

another thought came to mind, you might try moving to the side of the original brackets, make a bracket out of plastic with a lot of surface area, then use some type of epoxy

I am in the process of repairing it now .

Thanks for the tips, this will be the second time , however I will be adding more plastic.

Assuming you're going to try epoxying the tabs where they originally broke off, don't get discouraged if it doesn't hold. JB Weld is really good stuff and it's what I would use but there's a lot of stress on those tabs when you tighten the bolt. John Sullivans second post would be what I would do. You could even grind down what remains of the tabs and put the new in the same place. Let us know how you make out.

There's also JB quick, it cures faster but I don't think it's quite as strong. I would stick with the original and give it more than enough time to cure.

Reinforcing the coil ears with extra piece of plastic and plenty epoxy seems to be working.

Thanks for the update. Glad it's working for you.

FInd someone who really knows how to weld plastic......unless the coils are built with some kind of epoxies....then all bets are off for plastic welding.
