"But Isn't Alcohol Good for The Heart?"

Since the early 1970s, debate has raged about the benefits of wine and alcohol in general on heart health. Much has been written in the lay and scientific press about studies done in France on this issue. In recent years, re-analysis of the data on the French population and further follow-up have cast significant doubt on the whole theory. Vested interests in the alcoholic beverage industry have kept the subject in public view. Many church members are wondering whether their health is suffering through their not drinking alcohol on a regular basis.

There is no literature at all to show any apparent or real benefit of alcohol to the health of young people. The claim of apparent cardiovascular health benefits of alcohol in the middle-aged population has been successfully challenged in recent scientific literature.

In the studies that showed apparent benefit, individuals who had been previous alcohol drinkers were included in the control (non-drinking) groups; some of these had stopped drinking because of alcohol-related health problems. These same control groups, in general, were in poorer health than the drinkers. Reanalysis of the data, correcting for these defects in study design, showed no demonstrable health benefits to moderate drinking, compared to the nondrinkers. Further, more analysis of the groups studied showed that those in the moderate drinking group who originally had been thought to have better health outcomes differed in other ways from the control group. They had better diets, exercised regularly, were of a higher socio-economic status, and had better access to healthcare. This set of circumstances is well-known to be associated with improved health and longevity. The benefits in these studies were not due to moderate drinking but to other lifestyle practices.

How blessed we have been to have a health message that has warned us in detail of the ravages of these poisons, even before the epidemiologists did. How dangerous it is to seek what turns out to be a nonexistent health benefit in exchange for a wide spectrum of dangerous effects of alcohol. These range from impairment of motor skills and judgment to the potential destruction caused by trauma, violence, accidents, domestic violence, cirrhosis, cancer, addiction, and even dementia.

Even just one measure of alcohol impairs neurological function and may even trigger alcohol dependence. Most important, alcohol impairs our ability to make sound judgments and respond to the Holy Spirit. Who hasn

Taken In Proper Context "...A Little Wine..." Is Referring To GRAPE JUICE. God's Word Repeatedly Tells Us NOT To Drink Strong Drink and That Includes Wine.

Thanks for your post, Martin! Grapes have a lot of good for the body to by eating them or drinking grape juice, but to the fermented kind called, Wine, I am not so sure that any has any benefits except to harm the senses and the body by drinking it to access! We can overdo in anything by doing, taking or drinking too much.....even water! So let us do everything in moderation except in our Service of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, for Whom we can witness more and do more in loving kindness to our families and those we meet and who're living around us!

A little story of how God worked in my life during one of our Club Hunts at Pilot Knob for Civil War Relics in 1983! We had come off the mountain after a hot day of :twodetecting: and our group gathered together outside the motel rooms! There some were drinking what they called Coolers, which are only supposed to have a small amount of alcohol in them and others were probably drinking beer. I don't drink alcohol or wine....but tried Morgan David Wine when I first came to St. Louis, MO, after graduating high school in 1953! My girl-friend, Shirley & I, lived in an apartment building and we would sit on the front steps with other apart building dwellers and that is where I learned about that wine! I didn't drink much but thought it was good! I only drink it in 1953 and probably 1954 but after marrying in 1955, I never drink anything but maybe a little on New Year's Eve but I never liked alcohol! I was raised up a Baptist and a good Baptist didn't drink nor dance......A strict NO-NO!

I have gone many, many years without drinking wine except when I had bad congestion due to COPD and a bad cold making me cough and cough so hard that I could hardly breathe and then my ex fixed hot toddies for me and after the divorce and Cliff came, he did the same! Couldn't take the hot toddies without falling asleep and I never drank much because I disliked the taste! I hate Rum and won't even eat candies, cakes or cookies flavored with the Rum flavor!

Well to get back to the night of our Civil War Club gathering, I had never tasted a Cooler, so I took one little taste from my friend Ginny's small bottle! That's all I took, but I want you to know that I was getting ready to go to my 50th year High School Reunion the next morning and was listening to and watching Jimmy swaggart on the TV and he pointed his finger right at me, and was saying, no Alcohol or Wine....not even one little taste! God was speaking through him and right at me and I have no doubt about it unto this day! If I hadn't listened to God that day, it is no telling where I would be or what I would be doing, for I wouldn't be serving God in Jesus' precious name like I do today!

When God warns through whoever he wants unto us, then we better listen because one little taste can lead to another no matter how innocent it seems at the time, for eventually a person can require a taste and then an addiction to it and be serving satan instead or suffering with trials while trying to still live for God! We can't walk both sides of the fence, either we serve God and gain godly wisdom and follow in Jesus' light, faithfully, or we will be following the wide road of satan and serving him instead which leads into the Lake of Fire, when our sins aren't confessed and forgiven by still committing sin, willfully! May God Bless and prayers for those who need to stop drinking and kick the habit of alcohol, nicotine and any other addiction! With God all things are possible! Amen! Ma Betty

I enjoy a beer after a long day. and I know for a fact Thur Jesus I'm going to heaven. ------ Graw

Hi Graw! I didn't say anyone drinking who isn't drinking to excess will not go to Heaven when we are under the blood, but it is better to heed any warning given to each of us, if it would lead to our sinning and getting an addiction! Some are more inclined to getting a habit and addiction to it than others! God's Holy Spirit will let our consciences know if and when any thing we do is too excess and will harm us and not have our best in serving His only begotten Son, Jesus! May God Bless! Amen! Ma Betty

I could write a book here about this but will keep it brief.....I was raised in home that was unhappy because of alcoholism......my dad was having a hard time about WW11 memories I think anyway because thats the only time he would talk about it....I have my share of bad memories because of this ......The last12 years of his life he went to Church regularly because his brother started Preaching and stayed sober....A good man has emerged at this point thank God....We became good friends.....mama praying all the time......Now for me I started drinking at 12 years old with friends..At 25 I was almost dead.I asked God to help me he did and mama never stoped Praying for Us......This Nov. will be 25 years alcohol free for me, thank you God for answering my Prayers and those of others on my behalf...I hope I'm Praying enough for others....I want to be worthy of all the Grace and Love God has shown me.....God help me be all that you want me to be...Thank You For Your Son Jesus so I may have eternal life with You and all my Brothers and Sisters...Amen

...that what you do doesn't lead another to sin (or yourself for that matter). I do imbibe but I won't drink in front of people I don't know. I have no idea who might be struggling with alcohol and wouldn't want to be the one to make them backslide.

You are right Joe anything that is a stumbling block to other is a sin .

drinking a glass of wine with your spouse at dinner and someone being an alcoholic cannot even be compared.

And also in bible times there was no refrigeration, what happens to grape juice without refrigeration? it ferments............there are a million studies that show than one glass of wine a day is heart healthy. Do I suggest you or anyone starts drinking a glass a day? No.......but I think peple should read the studies for themselves and if they think it is wrong or they feel bad about it, then they should no do it. I myself do not think it is wrong. But it like like a lot of things, such as overeating. Anything done over and above moderation is harmful

Moderation is the key.
