Found this today in a field that has yeilded civil war era to modern(North Carolina). This seems to be made of lead, has "41" on one side, the other side has a N, the other symbols are ?????, it is about the size of a dime, but much thicker, what is it????, thanks for any help,

I think it could be a lead seal, there are all different kinds of them out there. Here is one I found.

Gary, if it is a seal then it should have a couple of holes around the edge, where string or wire was crimped through. They were used to seal something like payrolls or anything that they wanted to be tamperproof. If you lack these holes, then maybe it is a button. I don't have a button book so I'm not much help there. Hope this helps.
