Can anyone tell me what this is?

I found it in a Portland park last weekend. I didn't think anything of it till I got home to clean it up. At the bottom of the emblem is a date that says August 21 1912. We're not sure what it is though. It's just about as round as a quarter. There's a thin disc in between the top and the bottom of the round part. If it wasn't bent, you could spin that thin disc and it would open the holes around it making some kind of vent.
Thanks for any help.
Chris

It actually says "Pat'd Aug 21 1912". In the same location but the other side it says Made in USA.

,,,,I've always thought it was a salt shaker lid.
Mine did not have the date or patent stamped on it. <img src="/metal/html/shrug.gif" border=0 width=37 height=15 alt=":shrug">

You might want go back and check the Patent date again and see if it wasn

It does say the 21st. You can make it out in the picture I posted.

Since there were no patents issued by the U.S. Patent Office on the 21st Aug 1912. I looked through the U.S. Patents (i.e. Utility, Design, & Reissue) issued on either the 20th August or 27th August, 1912.

<PRE>Utility Patents:<UL><LI>20 Aug 1912

...I have tried several times to use that patent website and have never been able to get anywhere.
Thanks!
