Can anyone tell me what "Threshold" is?

Setting up my 13550 I adjusted the "Threshold" so it can be barely heard with my headphones on, however, I don't know what it does or if I even set it correctly. Can anyone explain to me what it does? and Am I setting correctly? Thanks so much in advance.

On the up side I have been out in my backyard tectin today as it was in the mid 50's and the ground had thawed enough. I found 1 clad quarter, 2 clad dimes, 4 pennies, a pin/broach thing and a button. I was also using the new pro-pointer and I absolutely had a ball with my new detector and I love the pro-pointer! I used it to recover every target I dug up.:detecting:

It allows you to hunt in silent mode, or to hear the hum of the machine. Charles Garrett always suggested one hunt with some audio hum, so as to hear the slightest change in audio, which could turn out to be a deep target. Also, if you hunt with some of that background hum, you know that your machine is turned on and working. I have caught myself more then once hunting with my metal detector not even turned on.

Think of threshold as the base sound of your machine when you're not detecting or detecting with no targets underneath.

In other words, it controls where the threshold of sound starts.

You can adjust it from no sound on up.

John-Edmonton's advice is always gospel when it comes to the green machine, take heed of it.

It's great you're having fun with your new detector!

On newer detectors it just establishes the audio for pinpoint and establishes a reference point for tuning the detector in all metal. And it establishes the minimum sound level for deep targets in discriminate mode. Since you have no all metal on the 1350 that part of it is moot. You can run it silent or at a faint hum as I do so I know my detector is working at all times.

It is adjustable to suit the individuals hearing ability in the environment where the detector is being used.

The audio threshold is also greatly affected by the audio pitch and the type and quality of headphones used.
