Can P I units such as the Goldquest SS detect wire gold?

When I refer to wire gold- I mean native gold. I live in Colorado where native wire gold is detected by prospectors(usually with VLF). A very expensive Minelab P I propecting unit I tested simply could not detect wire gold. The specimens I tested were of good size and could be detected with a strong response at more than 10 inches with a VLF. Howver, it produced no response with the minelab P I(could not be detected with an Explorer 11 either).I imagine gold has to be in a solid nugget form for the above detectors to work.So can the Goldquest SS or any other P I unit(with the exception of minelab) detect wire gold?

George,
I think you might struggle to receive a response from wire gold with most PI's, as is the case with trying to detect very fine gold chain (links) that are spread out lengthways. Once it's bundled together, good detection is then possible as there is now more electrical connection points and the detector "sees" more.
What you need is a nice length of wire gold that connects to a nice 50oz nugget....no problems now !! <img src="/metal/html/biggrin.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":D"> <img src="/metal/html/biggrin.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":D">

Hi George,
It sounds like you are trying to find Breckenridge area gold. Unfortunately, I have not tried my GQ clone on that particular type. I really need to but haven't been up there to try to find any recently and don't know anybody around where I live in Colorado that has any small pieces I could try as a test.
I have tried my detector on another piece of wire gold that was giving some ML's problems. On this particular piece, the SD 2200 wouldn't detect it, the GP would when in high sensitivity, and my GQ clone would detect it. This was a piece found in AZ.
Now, if a VLF can detect the gold at 10", I would expect you could detect it with the GQ. I don't know what VLF was used in the test, but I do know that a 3 grain nugget I found last year with my PI could be detected almost as far in an air test when testing against an MXT. Granted, the signal from that size gold isn't an ear blaster of a signal, but it is distinct.

Thanks for your response. I E-mailed you an address of a detector dealer that would probably let you test a wire gold specimen. My impression from this forum(Eric at one time listed some depths for very small gold nuggets) is that the GoldQuest SS is probably the most sensitive P I for extremely small pieces of gold.Any comments anyone?-if anyone disagrees- E-mail me or give me your views. That the Goldquest clone would detect as deep as a VLF for such a small piece of gold illustrates the point. As such it has a shot at detecting this wire gold. By the way the VLF detector I am using which will detect wire gold is a shadow X-5(forgive me P I users- I know I have sinned).
