Can you really trust the TID,s ?

Happened to me yesterday when I was hunting a park. I kept getting "sweet" 42-44 signals and thought for sure I had some quarters but no.....they were bits of metal tubing that had been used in the construction of a tot lot. Very frustrating indeed.

That sort of junk can be difficult to deal with. A couple of things you might be able to try is, when you pinpoint, listen to the VCO and how loud it is checking it against the depth meter. Also, you can go into prospecting mode instead of pinpoint and go over the target. You may be able to feel around the target to see what sort of shape it is as well as how many targets are actually under the coil.
Do a noise cancel and turn on target stability.
Mick Evans.

I get those quite alot! I get a sweet sound and the pinpoint seems to be a small target . Only to dig up a small piece of siding or something similar.

Swing the coil over the target from standing in different directions and tighten up your swing to the point where your moving the coil around 5 inches back and forth... this will help tremendously in getting an accurate tid.... if the tid fluctuates a lot from like 42 to 28..etc.. its probably trash, if it remains consistent on 42 or 44 from doing all that i mentioned before its a definite dig. But you can ask any treasure hunter, you never know for sure until you dig.. Even the best of them still dig trash... I bet Digger even digs trash every once in a while...lol maybe?

If a target met my three rules of consistency (sound, location and TID) and that TID was 42, I'd be thinking quarter here in the States. Simply put, I'd be digging it too! But keep in mind that TID is just one of the "tools" we have available for identifying targets with the X-TERRA. When we combine audio tones with visual TID and target location (in hunt mode vs pinpoint), we can get a pretty good idea as to what the size and "time constant" is for a non-ferrous target. That isn't saying it will always be a coin. It is only telling us what we typically think of as the "conductivity level" for that particular target. If it happens to have metallic properties that generate eddy currents similar to what a coin would generate, that target will lead us to believe it is going to be a coin as well. Bottom for me is, if a target meets my three rules of consistency, I'm going to be digging it up. If every hole I dug resulted in a valuable item, my nickname would have been "Finder" instead of "Digger". But I've been known as Digger for nearly 40 years now, with no change in the forecast! Without having X-RAY vision, the only tool that is 100% accurate in confirming the identity of any target is our digging tool. JMHO HH Randy

One thing is for sure, if you aren't digging a minimum of one piece of trash per good target, then you are almost certainly by-passing some good targets. Being strictly a coin shooter it is pretty easy for me to tell the difference between good targets and bad ones. Unfortunately I still dig a lot of trash because I'm forever digging the iffy targets always hoping for something valuable which fills my trash pouch, but not my display case...

"Finder" that's funny.

Chris, That is part of the game. I primarily hunt with the Xterra or the Explorer. Both machines have advantages over the other and the bottom line is if you do not dig iffy you WILL pass on good targets. I do find that I can usually tell that I am about to dig crap, but sometimes the crap is a small silver ring and the Nickel is a big Silver and Gold ring and the rusty nails have a V nickel underneath. There are just to many variables in play to be 100% certain on every recovery. 2 years ago I walked over My first Barber 5 times (different hunts in different weeks) before hitting it from an angle in which it was not trash and even then it was iffy at best, but it still had a moment of yeah that is a silver dime.

Those little Al triangles from siding a house get me way to often. Roofing nails too.

I was used to the guideline set by one of the other guy's detectors that said that TID was only 80% accurate, of course that was an analog machine. I don't go only on TID, I include sound, size of target, and pinpoint mode reaction. I realize that versions of pennies ID different, that is clad vs Indian, ect, but of any of the TIDs that I have been fooled by, it has typically been that upper 40's range. As soon as I see a high number I'm excited, recently I got a 44 and I was positive that it was a doosie .... turned out to be a bell off of a child's tricycle that was about 7" deep, LOL.
