Canadian quarters

I found some Canadian quarters (2006 and 200:geek: and passed them over the coil of my Elite 2200. They register in the nickel/iron range. Do any of you know the composition of them? There appears to be no copper in them like in USA quarters.

Mark

put them up to a magnet, you will be surprised :)

They are made from steel, no copper. From 1969 to 2001 candian quarters were made from pure nickle.

Thanks John. Weren't the Canadian nickles also made of pure nickel?

Mark

From 1955 to 1981 pure nickle, from 1982 to 1998 cupro-nickle 75% copper / 25% nickle, 1999 to now steel.

I went to the link provided and learned that the $2 Canadian coins have a 92% copper inner portion and a 99% Ni outer. That must play havoc with a metal detector.

I wish the big international bankers had not debased the money supply to the point that coins no longer have any intrinsic value. Just think if Canadian and US coins still contained the valuable metals they did in the 1950s.

:::::bounty::detecting:Hello mwaynebennett.
I collect coins in addition to detecting, and every now and then if the weather is lousy I search thru rolls of pennies nickels.,dimes and quarters when I can get them from the bank
After I open the rolls I run a magnet over them to see what may be in there ,I started doing this to see if there were any 1944 steel wheaties, I"ve never found any yet,
But like bucksport and sven and john said I found a few Canadian coins dating back to 1963 ;1968;Beaver Backs (5 cent) that are magnetic ; a 2003 ,1 cent Canadian; and 2007 ;2cent euro;(Ireland) a 2002 1 euro( Italian.)
I still havn"t found any magnetic coins while detecting but now that you brought this up I will program the time ranger to accept small iron targets. Thank you all for this info. I will try to put it to good use.
Thanks&Happy Huntin.

ON SEVERAL OF THE ANALOG COIN METERS CANADIAN QUARTERS WILL APPEAR AS EXCELLENT COINS AND REGISTER HIGHER ON THE METER THAN DIMES'
YET BE TOTAL CONFUSION ON A DIGITAL METER
