Has anyone traveled on a cruise (Royal Caribbean) with a metal detector ? My wife and I are thinking of bringing our metal detector on our cruise to the Cayman Islands, Costa Rica and Panama. Anyone have experience treasure/coin hunting in those countries ? Any suggestions or laws we need to be aware of ?

I have heard of folks contacting or e-mailing the tourist boards or whatever they are called at those types of countries to ask. I have never tried it so I couldn't tell you, but I have always been curious myself. Each country has their own laws so I would definately check first...
good luck,
Bill

There is no probem detecting Grand Cayman Island. My wife and a good friend or ours went down there earlier this year. They only ask that you don't mess with the local lizards and other wildlife on the island. The detecting was tough in the water. Pretty rocky bottom made for hard recovery of targets. We found more US coins than Grand Cayman coins and only one silver ring. We were the only ones detecting on all of Seven Mile Beach.
It's a beautiful place and the people were very friendly. Good luck on your trip!

Within the last year I took a couple of detectors with me on trips. Alos carried them on the plane. Did have issues with american airlines a little as they thought my Carry On was to large. Advice is take only one on board. I went to Jamaica,Cancun, & dominican republic. found platinum and gold rings at all three places while using my CZ20 in the water. Had the F-75 for the beach....No one said anything to me as most were just curious as they had no idea what I was even doing. One guy thought that I was looking for Fish? Found a lot of foreign coins also.. thanks

That's a first........often people think I'm using a weedwacker or something when I'm in a park or something.....

The Federation of Metal Detector and Archaeological Clubs (FMDAC) has started arranging Caribbean Cruises in February. The first year we had 16 couples come along. This will be our second year at doing this. We have experianced no problems in taking our detectors with us.
Check us out at www.fmdac.org Contact Jill McFeeders (National Treasurer) if you would like to come along.
