Can anyone tell me why mono coils are effected so badly by the precence of charcoul in the soil, such as burnt tree roots....even a small amount causes a fair amount of ground removal before signal disapates, particualy using large coils....24"...36" is there any way of reducing this affect.
regards barry.

Hi Barry,
First we need to know what detector you are using. PI or VLF? Charcoal is carbon and is electrically conductive, although much less so than metals. PI detectors will not respond to this level of conductivity, but VLF detectors, and particularly those running at higher frequencies, such as the Fisher Goldbug, may well detect charcoal. There is another possibility; where you have had a fire, any magnetite in the make up of the ground, will be converted to maghaemite, which does give a strong signal even on a PI. We used to find that on archaeological sites, the ground signal would be considerably stronger in areas around kilns or hearths for this reason.
Eric.

FYI: Many LRL and some MFD are affected by this same problem. Uranium ore also affected discrimination of fully Electronic LRL to concentraions of Gold or Silver, when suffecient concentrations of Charcoal or Uranium ore deposits were present in the area. I've dug many old fire pits 3-8 foot deep, and purposely buried deposits of Low grade Uranium ore to help find the true Gold location, in order to learn this. Dell
