 Fors Relic on the way!! :jump:

Stoof-tabsallday

Well-known member
Just placed my order with kellyco. Have a relic and a lesche 31" t handle coming!!!
I originally wanted the fors core, but it was announced that the relic was coming and decided to hold off for that.
Hope I made the right decision. Seems like the relic is the core on steroids! But please, correct me if I'm wrong.
I've already downloaded and read, reread, and reread the manual but I'll need it in my hands to truly get used to the function of it.
I'm so excited I don't know what to do.
My only worry is that my other detectors will be forgotten.... well maybe not the compadre haha.
Any tips, pointers, suggestion will be much appreciated!!

Although it will arrive mid week, it looks like I won't get to try it out, besides messing around in the back yard, until the weekend.
Glad to be a part of the nokta team and I hope it's everything I've read and have seen in videos!!
:super:

Sweet!:clapping:
I have swung the CoRe for over a year now (and loved it) and after just one short session would have to agree that the Relic is a CoRe with roid rage!
I think you made a great choice!! Let us know when it comes.

Oh I'm sure you will hear from me!!! Should easily blow my current detectors away. As I said, I hope my other ones don't just collect dust :-(
Any suggestions on settings to start with to get me off on the right foot?
Thanks.

Settings, IMHO, depend mostly on the site. In a trashier site I like DI3 as it gives you more info with that third tone. In DI3, I prefer to keep the sensitivity as high as the machine will remain stable. My areas are pretty remote with little EMI so I was able to run the Relic easily to 85. I ran iMask at zero, ID Mask at 5 as I like to here everything in the ground, Iron Volume at 2 or 3, Tone Break at 70- remember in DI3 the tone break only affects the mid to high tone break. You can't change the low tone break which is set at 20. I like 70 because copper pennies come in in the lower 70s and I want those to be a high tone. The eagle buttons I found yesterday came in in the 60s- nice mid tones that jump out at you from the iron tones.

DI2 is much more sensitive and "sparky". Better used in less trashy areas or areas that the trash is mostly nails. I was able to set the sensitivity at 65 before I got some chatter. I kept the the Tone Break at 20 during this first run, the iMask on 0, the ID Mask on 5. I need to play with the Tone Break more in this setting. I didn't have enough time to play with the other settings yesterday. I work for a couple of hours on Saturday mornings but plan to get out again tomorrow afternoon.

Of course, these settings may change as I get to know the machine better. Just where I started. I gleaned much of my information as to where to begin from Keith and Monte's excellent write ups from their testing of this machine and a bit from my experience with the CoRe. Hope this helps. HH.

Awesome, thanks dean!!!
Good ideas, and I'll definitly give them a try!!

I love mine, it dont miss much if it is brass it will find the smalls . I have only used the deep program. does i mask affect depth much?

So a better question would be, should I just run it at factory settings in DI2 and DI3 to prevent my first hunts from being spent changing settings?
The way I see it, at least where I plan to hunt next weekend (private property) I can always go back once I can better tune in the machine to my liking in case anything was missed.
I have a feeling I'll be digging everything that's not really low iron anyway, but figured I'd ask. There's alot of choices with settings and want some input in where to start.
Thanks!

The iMask setting helps to smooth out the machine in ground with lots of mineralization and hot rocks. It will cause a loss in depth because it "de-sensitizes" the machine so that it can run stable in hot ground conditions. If your ground is not causing your machine to be unstable or you are not getting falsing on hot rocks turn iMask off.

I do a lot of prospecting with a PI detector. You tend to run in to hot rock and mineralization problems out in the gold fields and, as such, there are settings/timings that can be utilized (like the iMask setting) to help deal with the hot ground. The goal of these settings is to keep the machine stable. The trade off is a loss of depth. Depth is not as important as a stable machine!!! That being said, if your ground does not require you to "de-sensitize" your machine to run stable leave iMask off and get as much depth as possible. All of the different settings/timings come with trade offs. You just have to determine which trade offs are the most advantageous for your hunt on that day.

Here are some golden goodies from my hunt last Saturday afternoon with a PI detector.

The factory settings are a great place to start. I run the factory defaults on the CoRe a lot. I don't believe that Nokta set those defaults by accident. I would, though, turn iMask to 0 if it is not needed.

I'm going to get out later today and play with the Relic some more. Good luck! ( Sorry for the rambling).

Thanks again dean!!
I'll definitly turn the I'm ask to zero and see if th ground is stable!!

Couple more questions gents!!!
Do the coils that come with the relic come with the coil covers?? I know the core's did.
Also, is the rain cover necessary? Forgot to order it and it's $40 and the shipping will be $15!!! Lol

Yes, they come with coil covers.
I live in AZ. We are not known for our copious amounts of rain here:bouncy: so I didn't order the rain cover. For that price I think I would carry a trash bag in my pack!

I was thinking Seran wrap lol.

I took mine out for the first time Saturday.

My one big gripe about it is kind of two things in one. I don't like the main display and settings being on the side of the control box. I like the way the Racer is laid out much better; I like having everything at my thumb access. And on that same note...it doesn't retain the last settings that were used. It's just a minor thing but I really like just being able to turn on the machine and ground balance it, and off I go.

Otherwise, I think it is a machine with a lot of potential. I hope I don't get in trouble by mentioning other detector brands and models here, but I sort of compare the Relic to the Shadow X5. I really liked the X5 and it was a very powerful unit. It was one of the first machines that I ever saw, to air test a nickel at 14 inches. It also had an uncanny ability to latch onto silver coins too...which is odd for a 19 khz freq machine. The X5 had two big faults with it though. They only made one DD coil for it and it had a love for deep iron. Since then....there have been several machines come along in that freq range but they all had down sides to them. They were really hot on brass and low conductors but fell short on high conductors. This became the norm so to speak. Then along comes this Relic machine. 19 khz...and with DD coils. It air tests really well...as in X5 level kind of air testing. AND it seems to hold that good detection for high conductors as well. So with that said, I am excited to see what the Relic can do in other sites around here.

It's still not a perfect machine but I do like it better so far, than I did the CoRe or Racer.

Here are my finds from my first hunt with it:

If I remember the manual correctly, there is a way to save your settings made as changes to the factory settings. Read the manual and it will say how to.
Still haven't received mine, but downloaded the pdf online and have read it over a couple times.

Yes, you can make changes to each and every mode as desired and save them to memory. For example, you can set ther desired Sensitivity, ID Mask (Discrimination) for the 5 Discriminate modes, Threshold for the GEN (All Metal) mode, Tone Break, etc., then select the search mode you prefer the unit to start up in when turned On and then Save those settings to memory.

During a hunt you can made changes to those settings momentarily to adjust to different conditions, and even change modes back-and-forth, and the FORS unit will retain those temporarily changed settings ... as long as the FORS Relic (or FORS CoRe or FORS Gold +) is still turned On and operating. When turned Off and later turned back on, it will start up in the Saved settings and NOT reflect the momentary changes you made when last hunting.

The Makro Racer, Racer 2 and Gold Racer work the same in that they will retain the in-search function changes, but once turned Off, those temporary changes are gone. Personally I find that to be a good design overall because with all of these Nokta and Makro detector models you can learn what settings seem to work best for you in each different search mode, then select your preferred start-up mode, then Save to Memory all those settings and begin searching after the unit is turned on and Ground Balanced.

The FORS Relic is my primary search detector, and while the Racer 2 is by 2nd primary-use unit for most of my hunting, it is often used for more urban Coin & Jewelry Hunting where I like the adjustments and full-info display viewable at a glance. For most Relic Hunting I do, having the control adjustments on the side of the control box is just fine with me as all I really need is the Target ID numeric display in the hand-grip.

I am sure you will enjoy the FORS Relic. Just select the search coil you feel fits the site you are going to search, adjust the rod so it is a comfortable and proper length and not overly extended out in front of you. keep the search coil about 1½"-2" off the ground and use a slow, methodical sweep to cover an area with proper overlapping. I usually sweep about a 24" to 30" straight-line path because I hunt very trashy and often brushy environments, but I do extend that sweep to about 36" in more open areas when using the standard 7X11 DD coil. The bulk of my hunting is done with the 5½" DD coil or in modest littered sites a 5½X10 Concentric coil.

Work with your Relic, determine the best settings and favored start-up search mode, save that to memory, then go have fun finding stuff!

ALL of my Nokta and Makro detectors came with coil covers on the supplied search coils. They are very thin and light weight so it helps keep the nose-weight under control and comfortable. They serve their purpose, and to me that is providing a little metal comfort for those who worry about such things, plus they can help if there is an occasional, incidental scuffing of the search coil on a rock or the ground. Since search coils shouldn't be scrubbed or worked on the ground and ought to be at least 1" and possibly 2" off-ground with the standard and larger coils, coil covers are not really a must-have.

As for environmental or weather covers, I have both the covers in-use on each of my Makro Racer models, and I keep the covers on all of my Nokta DORS series detectors as well. I bought them for the CoRe, Gold + and Relic units I have and I always keep the cover on the control box. When I am night-hunting, I can see the Target ID number in the hand-grip display just fine, but in the bright sunny day searches I find it difficult. So, on fair weather days I just unzip and remove the handle cover. The only time I leave the handle-cover on is when night hunting or on the occasions I hunt in a very light rain. I prefer not to hunt in wet, rainy weather, but there are times I might, and then the hand-grip cover is in place.

I need to order another set, and the Kellyco Sku: 1448-FORSEC set @ $40 includes both the control housing cover and the handgrip covers. They are not sold separately.

Ahhh ok. Cool. Don't remember readING that in the description. Makes more sense on the price now.
Thanks Monte!!
