Chinese coins find.

Hello all, went away for two days detecting back to an area where I found a previous chinese coin, and look at what we come up with! Still can't believe it. I found 52 of them! Oh, and the penny turned out to be a 1938, not a 1930, as we were hoping while cleaning it! Also like help to ID the closeups of the coins if possible, Thank you!

Wow Doug, I can't thank you enough for your help, and I know it would have taken a bit of time to crop and repost the photos. Garry may have a few in his pile that may be different again, if so I'll post a pic of them. I had a look at the sites and printed them out for future reference. In the meantime, can I ask, were the really old coins still in circulation in China, and is that the reason why Chinese brought them over here? It's a wonder that these coins wore so well, considering our old pennies often don't fair so well. Again, much appreciated. Angela

Hi Angela,

You are welcome and I enjoyed the research :).
I looked at the dates again and saw that there was an error. It can't be right that there are two emperors within the same period so here is the correction: SHUN CHIH, AD 1644-1661 and precedes K'ANG-HSI, AD 1662-1722.
Source of revised dates:

Angela, I am not sure why they had brought these older coins as maybe they used it as currency among themselves? A better question is why you are finding lots of chinese coins where you hunt. I think most of them were there for the goldrush so probably you may discover a gold vein/mine nearby! Happy hunting :)

Whoah there! that's a lot of coins. I expected to see one or two. Did you find each one separately? How deep were most of them? That is cool.:smoke:

Hello Doug, we live on the goldfields, and there is a lot of history of Chinese miners in Gippsland and other parts of Victoria. They brought over their customs and strange ways, and were misunderstood by the majority of Europeans who also migrated here (Australia). The Chinese were known back then as efficient workers, turning all types of soil conditions into market gardens, and could win the gold from places where other miners tended to walk away from, working old claims and mines. Most Chinese were also addicted to opium and gambling. So, I'm trying to research if they used the coins as part of the gambling games. I do know the coins were used in religious ceremonies. The coins were not of any value in Australia back then, so I imagine they use them in some sort of dealings between each other, again, I need to find out. Thank you for the website link. I'll have a look at that. By the way, I'm a true believer that there's more gold to be found in my area, it's just either down deeper, or in an undiscovered line of reef. A lot of gold was won from our area.
Hello Mirage, the coins were found no deeper than 4 inches. In some of the holes we got multiple readings, so out came 2 or 3 from one hole. It was quite exciting! Angela

Angela, I had a couple of those coins in my collection when I was a kid and didn't know what they were then. Mate of mine has a few he found when were digging bottles. That was a long time before we had detectors. I have some gold diggings lined up for the near future where I know there were Chinese. Could you tell me what mode you were in and what I.D. they came up with. I was out today at an Inn site that traded 1868 - 1876, no joy yet, someone has driven a bulldozer all over it. Did find some iron, couple of door locks and a stirrup so I must be in the right place. Plenty of area to look over yet.... H.H......Ken.

Hi Ken, I worked in All Metal mode, High Trash setting, sensitivity of 12, and the coins came up with different reading of -5 or +15, +19, +20, +22. The deepest I dug was only 4 inches for them, but a few were just below the surface, or several in one hole. All the best with your new sites Ken! Cheers Angela
