Church and Guns!!

[size=large]To make a long story short, the preacher caught 2 career criminals in their 30's at 2:00 in the morning stealing tools and material from the basement of the church that was being remodeled. You have to understand that this part of Alaska was relatively rural, and was patrolled by a handful of Troopers for a thousand square miles. A 911 call to the AK State Trooper may not put a cop on your door for as long as 45 minutes. Anyway, the preacher went over with a .44 handgun (a common sidearm in Alaska) and caught the 2 criminals stuffing tools in sacks. He shined a light on them and told them to freeze, but instead they both charged him on the dark stairwell (the only way out). He shot and killed them both. He was exonerated in court, and only had to pay $500 in a civil court but received death threats from scumbag family members who were no better than the scumbag criminals he shot. There was occasional damage done to the church at night; broken windows, etc. Anyway, he asked me, knowing I had a conceal carry permit, if I would mind carrying in church just in case something happened while we were there. We had news reporters sitting in church for a couple of months taking notes on the preacher, his sermon, etc., and reporting it in the paper. It was a big story in Alaska and some of y'all might have heard of it as well. Happened about 6 years ago. The preacher was one of the most decent men you'd ever want to meet.

I am glad the Preacher was/is a good shot. No telling what would have happened to him if he hadn't shot them. The country church I went to growing up, during hunting season, the trucks had the guns in the gun racks in the cabs. For that matter, they were always there year round. Even at school, during hunting season, me and some friends would go bird hunting right after class. Kept our shotguns in the truck on school property. Even a couple of the teachers/coaches went with us sometimes. Can't do that now a days.

It's really nothing new. A lot of folks around here carry guns to church, but there always concealed and we don't usually make headline news of it.
