Civil War Burials from the African American 55th Massachusetts Found With a Metal Detector

Hello, I am new to this forum! So, I posted this on a couple of other forums, and I thought it might be of interest on this one too.

I found the remains of 19 African-American Union Civil War Soldiers from the 55th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. They were found on a new construction site where they were putting a road in. I contacted the University of South Carolina Archaeology and Anthropology Department, and we excavated them before they were destroyed.

I just made and posted a youtube on the excavation and reburial of the soldiers. I will post a link so that you can see what happened if you are interested.

Thank you!

Thank you all for the kind comments!

I am still trying to get a South Carolina politician to speak at the ceremony..........it's not as easy as you would think!

The bust is an forensic sculpture of what one of the soldiers looked like. I hope wherever he is, he approves!

Thanks again!
Robert
