Civil War Relic Hunt in Georgia

Well over the holidays I went back to good ole Georgia for 2 weeks and I couldn't go without taking my Infinium with me. I had a blast and did the tourist thing which was a little different since I used to live there.

I found these relics at the Battle of Pine Knob. A small skirmish near my parents house. And also at the Battle of Gilgal Church which is about a mile away from the other Battle, and they were fought on the same day as they were the same line that the Federals attacked the same time. They lost both Battles. Then proceeded a month later to burn Atlanta...ha, no big loss the population of Atlanta is 5.6 million now :yikes:.

The reilcs are many percussion caps, pistol bullets, one iron shot from cannon ball other stuff not sure of and the best find was a Federal Button. Which was in great shape until I put in my pouch. I had alot of other junk in there like big hunks of iron crap and it broke a hole in the button as you can see from the pics, man I was pissed after seeing that :ranting:. Also a pic of all the junk I found. And of course a bonus pic of me playing with my sisters pot belly pig...:help:

Looks like a you had a great day with the Infinium!! :clapping: Nice haul on the percussion caps, those little dudes are hard to find. I'm saving money to add an Infinium to my little arsenal, can't wait to get mine.

You're having way to much fun with that pig lolol nice finds!!

Nice hunt!:garrett::detecting:That Infinium is one heck of a relic machine!:thumbup:Hey, what's the deepest you dug for a target on that hunt? Just curious. I know that Infinium just goes ridiculously deep, man. Yeah, GA is where I started MDing over twenty years ago when I was in the Army. I made some pretty cool old CW finds back then with my old original Grand Master Hunter. I'd love to go back to GA one o' these days with my LS and pick up some o'the stuff that I passed over with that old GMH back in the day:detecting: Hey man, your new girlfriend is hot. I see you like that dark meat!
Seriously, thanks for sharing.:biggrin:Happy Hunting!:)

Oh yeh Bill, I sure did miss it. Definatly missed the relic hunts and all my friends and all the millions of people to hang with. DIDNT miss the trafic...holy smokes man..took me 2 hours to get home from the airport which is 40 mile drive. I also detected a gold mine with no luck for nuggets..sure thought with the Infinium I would at least get one nug after a 4 hour hunt, but I sure did enjoy it. But being back in Medford I still like it here...nice place to live. Not overly exciting like a big city, been there done that though.

Hey Ron,

Yes Kennesaw is where my parents live and is where I was raised. Me and my brother when we were in high school used to detect the Kennesaw Mountain Battlefield, and we got caught alot but since we were young the rangers let us go....man we cleaned up with loot then. Wouldnt do it now though, they wont be as kind to adults. The battles I hunted over the holidays were about 5 miles from the mountain. Just a couple weeks earlier from that big battle.

The deepest target I got was the little clumpy looking item. It is lead and it was right at 6 inches and was ON a Federal trench. Out of reach of a discriminator detector and my 2500 might have got it in all metal, but the Infinium was nice clear hi/lo. All the other stuff was only 2-3 inches deep. I think maybe since all I found of value was small stuff, both areas were very much "hunted out". That is why I took the Infinium. My guess is that alot of detectorist used a discriminator detection and missed some of these smaller items that the Infinium wouldnt.

I tested most these items on my Ace 250 and it detected all of them but not very deep. So add some average hot ground and 3 inches, it might have missed them, includeing the 2500 in disc mode. But the 2500 in all metal would have got all of them I believe but would have been a noisier hunt in my ears.:garrett:

Yeah I've done the big city bit many times and am in one now but not even close to as bad as living in Los Angeles. :) Last time my wife was down there it took her and her in-laws 3.5 hours to go 60 miles on the freeway. One of the places where I lived that I was the happiest was a little town of 800 people in Northern Idaho. Glad you had a good time and found some goodies. It's always good to go back home once in awhile. How's your nuggie hunting been going here in Oregon? Have you ever thought of hitting Eastern Oregon in the gold country there? Take care.

Bill

Yeh I nugget hunt at least once a week here in Oregon and still have none. I usually get one or 2 a month still in California. Going down there end of next week to detect. That first Oregon nugget is a hard one to crack. There's some area I know which might produce better but is longer drive, like the Galice area. Still like going out with my Infinium, its just so quiet compared to nugget hunting with a VLF.

Any chance those percussion caps could go off? Anybody on this forum ever found a civil war belt buckle? If so, could you post some photos?
