CL mode

I learned something very interesting about the CL mode on the LTD Saturday. When hunting in an area where there are pop bottle lids I have found that CL mode will give the best ID to a bottle cap. Example: After digging, a few of these caps that would give a consistent high tone in both DE and BP modes (I did not check the bottle cap mode) I switched to CL and the VDI suddenly became constant. Sweeping to the right gave a 75 and sweeping back to the left gave a 17. On every sweep, the numbers did not jump all around. CL mode gave a high tone on one sweep and a low sound on the return sweep. Thought this was very interesting to share.

I was searching an old football field last night in BP, 3h tone, disc. 6, 92 sens.,and got a real sketchy deep signal. I could only get a slight high tone that seemed to be surrounded by foil and iron. The VDI would bounce up in to the 80's and then back into the 20's when I got to the side of the signal. The deep target was showing at 14" on the VDI and the shallow stuff less than 5".

I tried to pin-point and couldn't narrow it down, it was picking up all the shallow trash and at that point I was about to walk away because I couldn't narrow it down to an area smaller than a dinner plate.

Decided to try one last thing before moving on. I was going to drop the sensitivity in to the 60's or 70's and see if the signal would narrow or the small trash would disappear.

Well, by accident, I cycled through the processes instead of the sensitivity. The machine ended up in CL Mode and all of a sudden I got this crisp, long, high signal over the spot. I slowed my swing wayyyy down and walked around the spot and got a steady signal in the low 80's. I was still unable to pinpoint, but the CL Mode gave me a good idea where to dig.

Ended up being a lead sinker at 3-4" on the side of the hole and a wheat penny at no less than 12" deep (very mild loamy soil).

Long story short, I feel like I added a new weapon to my arsenal with the CL Mode. I'll definately try it in the future when I just can't get a clear signal in the other modes.

(on a side note: if you haven't learned how to supertune the garrett propointer yet, you're missing out. I used the technique several times last night and it found deep targets that I would have otherwise given up on)

That is very interesting for sure Markg, I have a park I've been hunting and i know there is silver here somewhere!! But it is full of bottle caps. I will definetly try your suggestion.Bottle caps here hit between dimes and quarters, sometimes very consistently, every now and then, though on the third or forth swing I will get a low iron grunt, that tells me its a cap,BUT not always, and I dig all high nonferrous tones. hh rick in mi.

Great information to try where I hunt. Will also have to try next time I get the LTD to the beach.

Ok how do you super tune the Garrett PP?

shooter type it in and do a google search......good video......hh.....Dan

Good Video for extra PP depth. Thanks boxofchocolates

Garrett needs to come out with an "LTD" model that has a slider on the side with a nickel in it. They could charge $20 more, advertise "now with twice the depth!!" and it would only cost them a nickel and a few cents for extra plastic!

I didn't get quite 2" more, but I did see a little over an inch.
Thanks for the tip.

You can use a coin, as 'shooter' provided with the video below, and I have seen people use electrical tape and rubber bands to hold certain metal objects in place, such as a spoon handle, etc. They all work, but I believe in 'simple' when possible. :)

When the ProPointer came out I checked one out and immediately figured a 'simple' method to hot-rod the device. I don't want to tape or rubber band things to the handle, and certainly don't want to fetch a coin from my pocket every time I want to use the PinPointer. Instead, like most of us, I have a collection of costume jewelry. I simply took an unimportant (not valuable) ring that I could fit on the 1st joint of my index finger just behind the fingernail.

Then, the 'metal' I need is already on my finger and I simply turn the pinpointer on and use it. If I fee I need any extra 'oomph' I just advance my finger-tip up the barrel just enough to start it chirping and gently pull it back a tiny bit until it quits. It's very simple and most of us have a few metal rings to pick from for a good index pinky fit.

I like your way of thinking Monte:thumbup:
