cloning tool question

I'm playing around with the cloning tool on paint shop pro 8. I look at their tutorial on using the cloning tool. they say you can remove an object from a photo. Their example shows the brush painting over a trash bag with grass. Looks flawless when they finish and you cannot tell that it has been down. When I do it on old pics it will take out the object but it looks smeared.
What am I doing wrong>
