COIL COVERS?

No, they don't reduce the depth.

What will reduce the depth though is if you swing your coil off the ground, or raise your coil at the ends of your swing. Two big mistakes people make while detecting.

I don't like using my cover on my Minelab pro coil because it collects too much dirt/grass, and I have to keep cleaning it. Besides, if you swing your coil on the turf (and not on pebbles/rocks), you have nothing to worry about. IMHO, it would take years of hard use from scrubbing the rocky/sandy ground before the coil would begin to wear through to the inside.

At least the ML covers come off easily..... have you ever tried to remove one off a DFX??? What a real pain. I agree you arent going to loose significant depth with a cover. I also agree about keeping that coil on the soil at the end of your swing. You will hear it false sometimes at the end of the swing.... its just adjusted its ground balance and reduced the sensitivity like when you pass over a disc out target. Sorry Dan, but im a believer in those covers. Improves resale, doesnt affect depth, and thou its a pain i always clean under my cover after every hunt. It does NOT take much moving soil in the cover to start making that coil fase as it rolls around. Our soil here in Ind. has a lot of this and that so you can scratch up a coil pretty quickly. I guess im just picky.

I've heard on another forum about painting the bottom of the coil with pick-up truck bed liner (the thick stuff, not just paint).
I might be trying that. Don't know 'bout resale value, but my detector is already 10 years and 3 models old.
