Coil ear breakage?

D&P-OR

Well-known member
I see there has been some problems with the coil ears breaking on the 9" & 10.5" coils as these coils have thinner "ears" than the small coils.---It seems a little strange to me that Minelab would make the larger coils with thin coil ears & the smaller coils with thicker ears.--Perhaps part of the idea is to try & hold down coil weight.-----Anyway---has anyone had a problem with the ears breaking on the 5 X 10" DD (HF) coil?----The ears on that coil look pretty well re-inforced although thin.-----------Thanks, Del

I've used all the coils extensively, and have not had a "broken ear" problems with any of them. I'm not denying that some have reported such. But it hasn't happened to any of mine. Part of the reason may be that I make sure the proper washer assembly is inserted in the rod, and I just tighten the bolt enough to keep the coil from flopping around. If it doesn't tighten properly, I've found it is due to dirt and debris on the washers. When that happens, I simply rinse them off. Another precaution I take is, when done detecting for the day and "fold" the coil back to put the detector in the bag, I loosen the coil bolt first. Again, that may not be why other's have experienced broken coils. But as I said, when I've treated them as the electronic gear they are, I've not had any problem with mine. HH Randy

Digger See ans how you have used most of the coils for the 705. How much more dose
the 10.5" coil W over the 9" standard round coil. And dose it have a heave nose?

thank you Don.

Plenty of coils specs, weights and discussions here-try the search function and you will find plenty of info on what you seek.

I'll add this-my gold pak 705 came with a missing part for attaching the coil. I could never get it tight enough. The little"secondary tabs by the ears got abused from my attempts at tightening. I anticipated problems so I ordered the "kit" from minelab (has an assortment of washers, spacers, wing nuts and Velcro). Should have ordered it before they doubled the price.
Anyway----had it for a few months w/o even opening it. After buying some extra coils from this site I took a look inside. WELL-the addition of one spacer solved all of my problems. No over tightening-just semi firm and I can make it so that the coil doesn't even budge.
With all that I've read here and all of the questions discussed on this subject -I either missed the bit of info or never saw it.

For those w the same problem----The addition of one little-tube like spacer from the Mine lab accessory kit-and NO MORE COIL TIGHTENING PROBLEMS. No distortion of the plastic hardware either.

I'll look later to see if it is listed in the owners Manuel. If NOT then Mine Lab should emphasize that particular part w the assembly instructions.

I've had 2 coils break at the ears, my stock coil that came with the detector and my 10.5 DD. The stock coil I hit on corn stubble and it broke, this happened after warrenty had expired. The 10.5 DD was only about 6 months old when it broke and I will say that Minelab sent me a new one within 2 days of getting the broken one back at no cost to me. The 10.5 dd just started flopping when I was detecting, didn't hit it on anything that I noticed. When I checked it I found that the right ear had broken right where the center of the hole for the coil bolt was.

The ears on the 10.5 18Khz DD snapped off last week. Used 2 part putty epoxy to rebuild, file, then drill for bolt. Then used a Marine Silicone to glue the entire assembly to the coil. First day out held up to 4 hours in the rain.

Del, I'm on my second 5 x 10 DD 18.75 kHz coil, and the ears have not been a problem on either of them. HH and Happy New Year. Pete

Tthanks guys.----It's been some time ago since we owned the detector but my wife had a new Xterra 70 with the 9" MF concentric stock coil.---It hadn't been used much at all but one of the ears broke on that coil.----Minelab was really good about getting me a replacement coil right out.---The guy at Minelab that I talked to about it at that time jokingly asked me if my wife had been beating me with it.---I told him "no, she hasn't had time to, we just got it".-------Anyway, I was just wondering how you guys are doing with the ears on them now-a days.------Thanks for your responses.-----------Del

I too have broken an ear on my 10.5" coil....fixed it with epoxy, that held pretty well for a bit, then re-broke....

I would have to say there is a design flaw in the ears of the 5x10 DD HF coil.....Mine broke today and its not even 13 months old....I used my 9" coil on my X30 for 5 years and have used it on the 705 off and on for the past year......still intact and solid.
Will call Kelly co tomorrow to see what they have heard from others and suggestions...not real happy about this.
I keep the coil tight enough to not flop around....but not too tight that i can't flatten it out after poking around picnic tables,cabanas,etc....far less abuse that the 9" coil received in the last 6 years.
I can always fiberglass it,think that would be better than epoxy....and better than Mine lab did!!!

Got home today and a package was on the front porch...After contacting Minelab in February I didn't have to say much to them about the coil breaking, they gave me a code # to put on the package and said they would replace it.Took a little over 2 weeks from the date i mailed it.I had purchased the 705 gold in January 2012 from Kco...so I'm very pleased they replaced it.
What I am surprised is,there is no fix to the problem.I plan on cutting some plastic washers with a hole-saw.The washers are going between the coil mount brackets and the shaft,it seems that's what cut into the coil bracket on mine..Rather than switch coils,I changed heads on the X30 shaft with the 9" concentric. An inspection would have helped.
Glad i had the 6" 18.75 DD coil. Never gave it much of a chance since i got it several months ago.Great coil!!!

I have had the ears break on two coils. One on my old X50 and one on my X70. I rebuilt one with high grade aircraft stainless steel that the coil didn't know was there. It didn't notice any difference in operation after the fix.

It's all about using proper width nylon or plastic washers. You need to make so they are tight before you even begin to tighten the wing nuts. This will alleviate any side pressure on the coil ears. I am sure with age and heat cycles you will be seeing more broken tabs.

Anyone want to sell broken tab coils feel free to pm me.

I had my 9" 3KHz coils ears break..This is my main coil that I have been using for the past 2 years steady! It was freaky that this had happen i though. Compared it to the 6" DD coil ears that are much thicker. Emailed Minelab about it. They took care of me and within a week i had a new coil. That is why i choose Minelab. Great Customer service! I will try some of the things that Randy talked about with my machine when don hunting for the day to hopefully prolong the ear life on my coil! Happy Hunting! Emmett

Over time I think that nearly anything plastic or ABS starts to degrade, especially in sunlight. I would expect in time people who have everything just right on their coil could potentially have a problem.

I think Minelab is probably like other companies. Say they released a 5x10 coil today with larger ears. They would be overrun with phone calls from nearly everyone that had that coil, broken or not saying that they wanted the upgraded coil especually if they just bought a gold pack that didn't come with the "new and improved" coil.

It would make sense that they may eventually come out with a redesigned version of a few of their coils but not similar enough to cause a rash of return or repair requests being that the new coil is different enough from the original coil not to warrant an even exchange. Obviously just a prediction.

Yeah, I had the same problem with my stock 9" concentric coil. One of the ears did break off and I don't remember hitting anything. Being under warranty, Minelab sent me a new one only days after getting the broken one. I now also have a 10.5" coil and I noticed there was a different screw and nit. Each had a wider shoulder than the original Maybe that was the difference.
