Coil for Pulsepower

toulic

New member
Hello,
I'm french, I live in Britain and I have many pulse, TDI Pro, Surf master and a Goldscan 4.
I've got a problem with a pulse power detector by Eric Foster : my coil is broken and I'd like to know if adaptable coils (of other brands) exist.
In others words, is it possible to use other coils than Pulse power ones on an Eric Foster metal detector ?
Of course, if any of you has an original Pulse power coil to sell (or a broken machine with a good coil), I would be glad to buy it from you.
Thank you.

Hi Toulic,

Which model of detector needs a coil? If you have the original coil and can measure the inductance, that would be the best thing to do. Try to match that inductance for the best results.

Fortunately, Eric's detectors generally are very forgiving and will work with a wide range of coil inductances. The detector may not work at the minimum delay but should work. So, the answer to your question is yes, a coil made for another PI designed by Eric should work, but the detector's coil should be from a detector in the same power range. This is further defined to mean another of Eric's detector coils should work if the detector is of the same power range, if the detector you have is a high powered detector. In other words, a high power unit should have a high powered unit's coil. Ideally, they should have the same inductance. Later high powered PI's usually had a coil with an inductance of 300uh or so.

A low powered unit can use either a high powered or a low powered detector's coil. This means a Beachscan, Goldquest or similar low powered unit can use about any coil, while a GS 5, GS 4, or one of the other high powered beach machines should have a coil built for a high powered detector. A low powered coil would probably work but get quite warm and may fail over time. Also, early low powered coils had an inductance of about 1mh. Later low powered models had a 300 uh coil so they could work at 10 usec.

So, to be absolutely sure, you would have to simply try it but I would expect it to work. It just might not work at the minimum delay.

If you decide to build one yourself or have one made for you, and the detector is a high powered PI, aim for 300 uh and use 26awg or larger wire. I recommend one use Teflon coated wire if possible.

Thank you for your answer.
I have got a GS4, can you tell me technical informations for this detector's coil.
Do you know if It's possible to use another coil from another builder (white, minelab, ...) because in france, it's very difficult to find pulse power's coil !!
Someone tried it before ?
Do you know where I can buy it ?
I hope you anderstand my enghish, thank you for your patience.

Hi Toulic,

My recommendation would be to change the GS 4 connector to the standard 5 pin mic connector used by Minelab and White's TDI coil. Any ML or TDI compatible coil including the Razorback brand third party coil should work just fine on the GS 4.

If this is a one time change then changing the connector on the replacement coil may be the easiest. Finally, one might build an adapter that would allow you to adapt any ML compatible mono coil so it can be used on the GS 4.

I believe the GS 4 had a 450uh coil but the 300uh will work just fine. I have a GS 4 and have already used a 300 uh coil on mine. The minimum delay is 15 usec, so there is plenty of delay for most coils to work.

The GS 4 is only built to use mono coils, so a modification would be required to use a DD coil.

Hi Reg,

Thank you very much for all informations, I begin to understand what you explained.
We were many friends (from a detecting forum of beach combing) in France to wait for your answer.
If you have more informationbs about it (technical drawings, or trying experience), you can send it to me.
If you know someone selling his coil (pulse power), you can tell it to me, I'm interested to buy it.
Bye and have good moments with your detectors...
