Coil question

GoGoGopher

New member
I have a Bounty Hunter Land Ranger and do not use it anymore (It needs to be re-tuned anyways).
I have the 4" coil for it...The Bounty Hunters operate at about 6 to 6.5Khz frequency...My Classic operates around this same freq...if I could figure out which wires are wich on the BH coil...Do you think it would work on the Classic if re-wired to a plug for it??? Finding out which wires are which is going to be the hard part...

Thanks,

Trying to rewire a coil to fit another detector is playing with fire. Several years ago I had a friend try to rewire a Garrett coil to fit a Compass detector. As it sounds with you, he didn't have the slightest idea which wire to put where.....Bottom line, he said nevermind, went back to his old coil, and his detector was fried....Whether it screwed up mother board, father board, or any other name an amateur knows about the inside of a metal detector, it never worked again. What was sad was he could have purchased the right sized coil used for 50 to 60 dollars. Instead he now has a $400.00 paper weight.

If you're talking about the 6.592 kHz of the Classic lll, I've been told it has been done with some success. In fact, several years ago there were adapter plugs available that allowed switching these two coils without moving the wires in the connector. I've not hardwired one yet as I've been hunting for one of those adapters. A phone call to Whites and FT might get you the wiring arrangement for the respective connectors. HH Randy

Finding a plug that Whites uses is the hard part. IF you do wire it wrong the cl3 will beep but I find them hard to break. If it it doesn't work right, shut it off right away as not to fry it. Also you may get the coil working but the GB may be off, its something to check. Have Fun! There is a market for broken detectors on E-bay.
