Coil Question

dm

New member
Hey guys i need some advise here. Will be getting the new explorer soon,i know it comes w/the standard coil but i still want to get a smaller coil also. Am thinking of getting the sunray 8" or the 5X10 Joey for it. Would like to hear from some of you experienced guys what they like and what they use on there machines.. And what kind of depth these coils will produce. Not to much time to hunt up here in MN. Just getting to damn cold right Rick (N.D. Thanks for help guys

I feel your pain too. I live in Wisconsin and there was a pretty hard frost this morning.

I have an SE on order and will be purchasing the SunRay X-8 based on what I see posted in the forums.

If I were you the first accessory I'd buy would be the X-1 probe. It will be the best accessory you ever buy for your Explorer. I have both the stock 8" coil and the Sunray 8" coil. I really don't see much difference. If money is an issue go with the stock 8" if not go for the Sunray, but only after you buy the X-1 probe.

Just my opinion :).

I visit Rick(ND) quite a bit when I am able to and he never told me that there was yet another user in Minnesota. I know of Dug and Rich Alfano but you are a new one. Where do you live? To answer your question, I have the Minelab 8" Coil which I have used and it has some good depth. I have found coins a good 8" or so deep with it. It is light weight and works well. But my primary weapon is the 5"x10" Joey Coil. This coil is very light weight and works well in trashy area's. I have found coins with it at about 10" or so and it feels nice on the end of the shaft and a person could swing this all day if one wanted to. The reason I use it is because you have the same size sweep area as the Stock 10.5" Coil so you can cover more ground with it. The only down side of it is that this coil isn't waterproof so a person would have to use some kind of sealant on it if wanting to use it in any type of water. I don't think it would work well in water though since it is a solid coil. It would want to float to the top of the water I would think so the 8" coil would be better for this type of hunting. Also, I have used my Stock Coil in area's that I have used my Joey Coil in and I couldn't find any other coins in that spot so I know the coil is doing the job. Any way you choose, you can't really go wrong on either coil but for me, it is my Joey Coil all the way. Good Luck with your decision and HH.

hey James you should know me Denny from St.Cloud my wife rick and you have hunted at Hankison many times see ya later bud.

I didn't realize that you looked on the Findmall Forum's. Maybe you could post some finds when you get some. Glad to hear from you and Good Luck and HH.

Lets face it an Explorer is nose heavy amd a smaller coil certainly improves its ergonomics which is a plus. Many swear by the Sunray 8 but the Joey coil seems to be the favorite of many also so your call also. Sure you will loose some depth, improves the ergonomics and improve you pinpointing abilites so certanly the way to go for many..
I surely don't care for a rod attached pinpointer but Sunray is surely the best handsdown and an option for many..Certainly nice to make a super unit even better...in my eyes...
