Coil selection for my Explorer II

Bryan/EastTN

New member
Hi gang, I just picked up a really nice mint condition Explorer II (will be here this week) and wanted to ask a question about coil selection and see what ya'll use most of the time. The Ex II will be coming with the stock 10" coil and, me being an avid small coil fan, went ahead and picked up a Sunray 5" coil from my dealer too at the same time.

That is the coils that I'll be starting with and will probably be using the 5" most of the time for the places that I'll be hunting. (I like to weed through the trashy parks and camgrounds for coins) :detecting:

Thanks in advance for any input on what coils you guys like or use on your Explorer.

The Explorer is the ONLY detector that ive felt so confident in that the only coil ive bought and used is the SEF 10 X 12. Explorers can be worked slower than most detectors and once you learn the tones can pick out those close targets. Some people say the explorer has a slow processor.... put it on AM and listen to the targets going under the coil. I dont think you will think its missing much. It can be worked at almost a stand still. Big Fang did a recent post on what he had noticed with the pro coil... take a read. Dont get me wrong, a small coil has a better concentration... but you have to overlap them to take advantage of it.

Bryan, small coil is good when you cant get anything more with original 1050 coil in heavy iron fields and you know it should be something left. you can buy sef,pro ,but 1050 is excellent coil. good luck

The standard 10.5" coil does kick bottom, and is really about all you need. It is a tad heavy though. My best year detecting, I used the standard coil almost exclusively! I remember comparing a signal with Neal (he was using the SR 8" coil). He said he could hear the target but that it was not something he would dig. It sounded like a nice coin signal that had some trash nearby using the std. coil. Ended up being a standing liberty quarter down about 8-9 inches! In my area I have dug a measured 11" wheat cent, so depth on the std coil is about all you could need. My recommendation is to use the standard coil and learn it well, them add a smaller coil for those really trashed-out spots.
