Coils, DD vs concentric

The DD is always a upgrade when buying so my thinking is that it is all around a better coil choice. So other than a sniper type coil for trash or up close to fences when is the concentric a better choice than the DD. I want maximum depth and fastest recovery and am not one to change coils at all so the DD seems like the right choice for me. What am I missing here?, thanks, both my F2's have DD and my F70 will too. I coin and relic hunt, no prospecting

Concentric allows you to hunt those sights without as many rusty type stuff being hit.... I find it's easier to hunt really trashed parks with the concentric too. Better seperation.... JMO..

When DD first came out.No one really liked them.......... Oh Cencentric pinpoints much better too.............

Thanks for the info on the coils

The DD's will work well in trashy areas with the modern detectors with fast recovery speed. With older slow speed detectors DD's just made it worse trying to isolate a target in infested ground. All the F series are really fast and the DD's accentuate this.

And in some instances where small rusty items are in the ground.. Farm House sites..

The DD's do work well. In my experience they do hit a little more iron targets that read as high coins.

Hi Campnagle,

I read your post and the part that caught my attention was where you said, "am not one to change coils at all".

That in turn led me to think about some of my finds. I have a nice little Topaz gold ring. You can see it in the picture. Its the one with the big stone on the right. Nice ring.

I would have never made that find if I hadn't had the right coil on my detector. It was masked by big iron. To find it I had to use a coil size that would allow me to get close to big iron. What I'm saying is coil selection/changes are important to making good finds. If you purposely limit yourself to just one coil and only hunt with that one coil there are a lot of targets you'll never find. Either your coil will be too big, or your coil will be too small for the site conditions.

Every coil has it's purpose and place and are much easier to carry into the hunt than another metal detector. I'd encourage you to reconsider your "one size for all application" approach.

Well, I always think of a DD coil as a fine comb.
The detection field in this narrow band, anything in it will get detected. And more likely mask something directly beneath it.

A concentric is more cone shaped and can engulf shallow trash and still detect a coin directly beneath it.
More of a coil for coin sized targets.

I can certainly agree that every coil definitely has it's day. Just think of it as another size or style socket to do the job.
