Coins Found With Safari - 1846 - 1848 - 1849

This is a follow up from another posting I put up a few weeks ago. I found a large cent dated 1846 in the remains of an old cut stone foundation - here on our farm in North Eastern Ohio. I went back to this site a week later and found two more large cents dated 1848 and 1849 ! All three were in area no larger than 25 ft. around. Soaked the coins in Olive Oil for about week.

I was using Andy's "Cherry Picking" coin program" - (14-15) and ( 32-33-34-35-36-37-3:geek:. All three of these large cents came in as solid 38's - no bounce at all - even when crossed from three different directions. All of the coins were found at a depth of 5" to 6". I'm really lucky to have this site so close to where I live - it's only about an 800 ft. walk through the woods. I plan on going back to this foundation again this weekend - and I'll be sure to program in ( 7 to 19) - just in case the original owner's of the house lost any gold !

PS - Just got a Garrett Pro Pointer last week - it's FANTASTIC - what a time saver !

Nice job brother! I haven't pulled a largie in some time now, I'm hoping to break the drought on saturday. If you found those 3 in such a small area you have quite a few m ore outings and finds in store for you in that area. Nice finds.

Hi Fog, Your reading my mind about there being more large cents on this site. I've been told that the larger cut sandstones were removed from this foundation about 25 yrs. ago. It looks like the area was graded off after they were done removing the stones. I was thinking that there could have been a coin cache in the walls or floor of the foundation and when they graded the area ... the coins got spread out all over the yard. When I go back to this site I'll be sure to open up the sensitivity and listen for any deeper targets that I could have missed.

I also just found the old barn foundation that belonged to the same property owner. The barn is approx. 500 ft. South of the house where I found the three large cents. I have not hunted on the barn site at all yet - but I'll be going there ASAP !

Good Hunting ! - Mark

Found out some new useful safari info. If you're like me and use Andy's custom coin mode (same settings as as Safari*** Ohio posted.) you may want to open up the 13 and the 19. I've had a nickel ring in at 13, and today my buddy pulled an 1860's fatty from an old site, he let me swing it so I could see what the tone ID was.... it scrimmed out with Andy's setting. It rang in at 19, since the 1859-1864 were made of nickel and copper. So I modified my custom coin mode to include 13 and 19. I'm sure the pull tab and shotgun shell digs will go up but at least I know I won't pass any nickels or fatty IH's.
