Compadre modification

KVM2

New member
I have an older Compadre with the 7 inch coil..I would like to be able to unhard wire it so that I can use a 4 inch coil in really trashy conditions, also a 9 inch coil.Question is..What number of pins will the add on coils take, and will the Compadre be able to drive a 9 by 8 coil? I have the 4 inch off a Golden, and a large coil from a Vaquero..One or the other will solve half the problem. Does Tesoro provide modifications like these on a pay basis? Figure if they do it, warranty will still be good???????? thanks for your help

not sure but probably you can use other umax coils, obiously you need to cut wire and find a 5 pin connector like XLR type.

I don't know the specific parts, but this has been done. I know the 4" worked well and I'd think any other compatible coil would too, but might need to be tweaked for your ground.

I know compadre has different trimmers insiede control box, ground sensivity, and threshold.. but replacing with external pots void warranty.

My 2 cents would be to buy the umax extension cable. Do all the connection work outside the control box. Safer that way :) Tesoro will not do any mod work for you. That way they maintain their integrity. You will have zero warranty after the mod. Will a bigger coil work? It will work fine, but you will have to weigh the price difference of Modding a compadre compared to buying a silver it higher. The compadre is a umax btw, none of the 4machine pin coils will work.

I don't know about umax coils , but don't the compadre operate a 14 kHz ?!

I have a 7" coil on my Compadre, too.I would never consider messing with it.
I don't know about yours, but on mine "the sweet spot" does not seem to be as big as the whole coil.
I can move around through very trashy areas pretty easily, and isolate targets real close together so it works perfect for me.
Maybe yours is different.

JB(MS) documented what you are asking about.

Hi KVM2, I put a plug outside the box on my Amigo II awhile back. It is the same machine all the way as your Compadre, but in a different package. While I was scrounging up info on the situation I did run across a post from one of our UK Friends that mentioned that the widescan coils did not work on the Amigo II.Be good if we could get some more input on that, but that was the only comment I have seen on using the Widescans on Amigo II/Compadres. I have no doubt to question it, because those guys have been modding their machines for their situations for a good while now. HH,Charlie

We do not do modifications at all. Yes, we do have tone change with a cost for some of our models. But that is it.
