I don't trust "thumbing the knob" technique, the only way to find out what the signal is telling you is to dig it up and look at it. I found an Indian head penny with the Compadre at 7" deep, it would disc. out just after the foil mark on the disc. knob......Just my 2¢

I was really excited to go hunt today after work and just looked outside so see rain :-(
My rain cover and coil cover arrive thursday. Had to order from different vendor and still got hosed on the shipping. 24.00 order, 11 shipping.... go figure

Which is exactly why I hunt in all metal and dig all solid signals no matter where they end up on the disc knob.
I have found deeper coins that acted exactly as you describe and they still acted within my rules of thumbing past and then coming in solid thumbing down so I trust this method although like most techniques in this hobby it is never going to be 100%.
I have always said I might actually miss something doing it this way but I still find way more great targets then allowed by law and I am much more rested because I cut out digging about 80% of the trash I used to dig in the past by avoiding the not so solid stuff.
Of course you never know what you are swinging over until you hold it in your hand and I agree with that 100% but there is no way I am wasting my limited energy digging iffy maybe targets when in my mind a more high percentage success rate can be achieved by digging targets that fit into my rules for digging the mostly solid stuff..wherever they end up to be.
It does seem to work for me, numbers wise, and numbers and percentages rule my world in this hobby.
I dig foil,tabs, nickels ,zinc, all of it and even iron from time to time because chains and other weird targets could come in anywhere and I know about how signals can be skewed and come in lower at the very end of the scanning field limit and have always taken that into account on the deep ones.

As I mentioned everyone does this differently and this is my way, if you want to do it another way great if that makes you happy.
This is not a life and death job, it is a hobby an fun is the goal no matter which way you choose to do it and I know how good you are at this doing it your way and I assume you are every bit as happy as I am doing it my way.

Hi Revier...I was not implying anything about how you hunt, I was just making an observation about the Disc. circuit of the Compadre. I've had 2 of them through the years, a 7" coil and a 5.75" coil. It loses depth when the discrimination is turned up... and in the places I hunt with one, I only disc. out small nails.

Not taking it wrong, I get it...no harm no foul all is good.
I learned long ago about losing depth as the disc is turned up.
One day it hit me that deep targets could well act unlike what they are and indeed come in as trash if they disc out low like in that foil scenario you described.
If you know that the Compadre does lose a bit of depth as the disc goes higher, and that really deep targets can and will disc out before the knob hits the actual disc out range it is a no brainer.
Luckily, I have observed on the few deep ones in this situation the thumbing thing still works and the target still acts like a shallow one and comes in pretty solid and clear although way lower than normal.
I make very little digging decisions on knob location, it has to do with target behavior more often than not.
I would hate to miss good targets deep which is why I usually hunt all the way down in all metal before thumbing that knob unless I have no patience for a high level of trash that day which is rare but happens once in awhile.
Still, gotta keep on you toes out there, use logic and common sense at all times.

I like the idea of using all metal first and thumbing to get a better idea about a target. Unless it's really really trashy where I'm hunting. Then I would set it a bit higher to start.

idea maybe we can turn this thread in to a church of the compadre type 30 odd pages wont happen now will it I jinxed it

last winter I had 2 soccer fields never been detected made 1982 from what the grounds guy told me, deepest targets 5" odd started with disc to accept zinc and spent weeks pulling all targets zinc and up, plenty of coins few silver rings a bracelet too I think. a lot of it done with a compadre 5.75" and other Tesoro's. yeah couldn't hear any targets solid left more like a month maybe a bit more I would have to check my book.

then I turned the disc down just knock out small nails etc.... and then went to work man what a job !! tabs ville , I did learn a lot from the whole exercise, more than any other detecting I have done.

sure I listened to tones etc.. but I was digging hell for leather.

I learnt that there was a lot of target masking as I dug plenty of coins in the higher than zinc range, including silver rings and bracelets, I also learnt that those loud ball busting tabs hide the softer sounding gold, I learnt that on edge gold rings sound like crap choppy no dig type targets.

I had to clean out every tab and low conductive crap from one field and all that come a real soft sound thought I had taken everything out was a gold cuff link went wow I would never have heard that if I never pulled all the crap out got up and thought what's my chances of the other one being there same sound as soon as I put the coil down and swung about 2' away and sure enough there it was the pair, find of a life time really. never found a pair of anything

so yes there are probably still targets in this place never get everything and well its Gold Racer time to really finish it off.

I may never do this again in my life but an experiment it was and like every day in this place for months only missed rain, and game days.

this is just an overview I could probably write a book about it

so anyway the final count was 6 pieces of gold and well I would have to look at my records to give a count on silver and coin totals a lot of coins and probably 20 bits of silver jewellery.

would I do it again yeah in the right place

and all found with Tesoro's and a lot of it with the 3 compadres in my list very under rated metal detector !!

i will add i am no expert just suborn as a mule and willing to toss out everything i think i know for a new experience in detecting and i recon no 2 places are the same they all have there thing !!

and what the hell it kept me moving and outside doing what i like in a nice spot what's not to like biggest thing i probably learnt was just to shut my emotions off and dig and not have a reward in sight just the experiment !!

Great story!! Maybe I'll try this if I can have the patience for it. Not sure what I'll do to be honest. All these methods for hunting sound great. I guess ill have to try them all and figure out my version. Really looking forward to it though!! Wish I want so busy. Between work, school and my gym regimen I don't have nearly enough time as I'd like, but I do enjoy the time I get!!

thanks and maybe some inspiration for you, but i totally agree time is the most valuable thing we have and it all comes down to priority's, what might be high on my list is not even a thought for someone else.

we all develop our own style in regards to detecting no one is right or wrong its just how they may do it on any given day i went cherry picking last few hunts working up to gold hunting so no i don't dig everything all the time but seem to get on a roll as the weather cools down, i am down under so summer is over and i might start digging for gold soon well that's the plan see how i go its hard work for the most part.

just get out when you can hey that's all any of us can do!

Seems like every day since I got my compadre, it's rained. It's that time of year here. Around April it rains alot. Waiting for that clear day!!
