Concentric or widescan, ~ :surrender: how to test ???

SNOWY

Our Tesoro distributor has also dug up an 8 1/2" un-labelled Tesoro coil with a 4 pin Lobo plug,
~ it is a solid coil, ( that with no hole in the center ) he's not sure if it is a wide scan.
I'm figuring that because the coil is an 8 1/2" coil with no hole in the centre, that it is a wide scan...

Does anyone know of a test I could do to work out if it's a wide scan or concentric ???

Hi Snowy

Here's a test, but it won't work at 100%.

Place a coin on the ground, and while levering the coil, sweep above the coin with the CENTER of the coil passing upon the coin, no matter the distance.

When the beep disappears, then lower your coil (still sweeping) to the point the coin is audible again.

Now, maintaining the coil at the same height, sweep with the edge of the coil (coin should still be full under coil) above the coin. If you get a signal now, the coil is a DD. No signal, the coil is concentric. The test is based on the fact that concentric coil have a conic detection pattern, and most DD have a "basin" detection pattern.

Hope this helps.

You certainly helped me Nick!

Thank you very much... :detecting:

I'm getting a new Tejon tomorrow, ~ I'll be using your test for sure!

My pleasure, Snowy.

But please give us a little feedback after testing the coil. Might be helpful for fellow hunters.

Nick.

If you have a pinpointer you could use it and try to find out the orientation of the windings inside, to determine concentric or widescan.

That's a good idea too Scott!
I'll try both tests and post the result...

Thank you.

I'll be picking up my Tejon in around 6 hours...:clapping:

Our Tesoro distributor also told me to run a small silver coin around the edge of a coil to see if it is a wide scan or concentric coil.
I had a small 3/16" round lump of pure silver which I pinched between my thumb and finger,
I then ran it around the edge of the face of the 8 1/2" dia coil with the Tejon turned on.
I had the sensitivity at minimum and ran the silver blob around the coil,
I got a beep at 12 o'clock ~ and a beep at 6 o'clock...
The coil is a wide scan.

I did the same test with the concentric,
and because of the sensitivity being at zero I got no response at all around the edge of the coil.:detecting:

Worked fine I feel...

Well thank you for the feedback, Snowy !

I'm very glad the test worked well, also glad I could help you from here, old Europe !

HH with your:tesoro:

and God bless !
