Confession and Communion

crabby

New member
I am currently having a discussion with a Catholic friend regarding Communion confession. He is trying to get me to return to the Catholic church. I left the Church for many reasons in my early twenties ( I'm now 61) when I heard Oliver B. Greene preach "You must be Born Again !!!!" on the radio.

I asked him one day, what it would take for me to go back to the Church and take Communion. On a personal note, I'm going to take Communion whenever it's offered. He said that I must see a priest and go to confession before I receive. My response is that why talk to a priest when I can go right to God; He knows my heart.

My dilemma is the I cannot find a biblical reference about asking forgiveness for sins after salvation. We've all sinned and come short of the glory of God so we slip and stumble and fall at times.

Can anyone help?

Bill and I are great friends and we love to spar with one another; it's such a good learning experience.

1 Corinthians 11:23
For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, That the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread:

1 Corinthians 11:24
And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me.

1 Corinthians 11:25
After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me.

1 Corinthians 11:26
For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord's death till he come.

1 Corinthians 11:27
Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord.

1 Corinthians 11:28
But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup.

1 Corinthians 11:29
For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord's body.

1 Corinthians 11:30
For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep.

1 Corinthians 11:31
For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged.
(KJV)

1 John 1:9
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
(KJV)

1 Timothy 2:5
For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;
(KJV)

Galatians 3:20
Now a mediator is not a mediator of one, but God is one.
(KJV)

Matthew 23:9
And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven.

Matthew 23:10
Neither be ye called masters: for one is your Master, even Christ.
(KJV)

James 5:16
Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.

Acts 19:18
Many of those who believed now came and openly confessed their evil deeds.

Hey Crabby,

Try this and see if it helps your dilemma: Read 1st John, Chapters 1 & 2; especially these verses - 1:6-10 and 2:1 & 2. Reading both chapters together might help settle the issue for you, but using these particular verses should nail it down for you... maybe. Get your Bible and read it for yourself. Read both chapters - but here are the verses I mentioned:

1st John - Chapter 1, verses 6-10: (King James Version)

6 If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth:

7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.

8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

1st John - Chapter 2, verses 1 & 2 (King James Version)

1 My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:

2 And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.

Hope this helps.

Hi Crabby! You've been given lots of Scriptures and can gain knowledge and godly wisdom from them! My thoughts are that a Priest is just a man born with sin also, but the Mediator between us and God is Christ Jesus, the only begotten Son of God born of a virgin who conceived by the Holy Spirit and, therefore, was born without sin (unlike all humans) and took all our sins upon Himself on the wooden cross at Mt Calvary so that we could be saved and forgiven of sin by Him and Him only! A mere man or ordained one cannot forgive us of our sins but he can pray for us!
God Bless! Betty

Thank you all for helping me. As always, the Spirit has led me to the source of all understanding; His Holy word. You Saints who helped me; I can only offer you my thanks and prayers.
