Confused about the Excalibur and Infinium LS

Can someone please explain the difference between the Garrett Infinium LS and the Minelabs Excalibur 1000. I don't understand why one has 17 freq and the other 96 freq. Is the Excalibur a PI too? I thought PI's were no good on land but the Infinium says its good for both land and water. Really confused with all this technical jargon, what does it all mean. I am trying to save up for a land/water machine to use on both fresh/salt water. I have a Fisher 1235-X but want something that can get wet.
Thank you.

The Excalibur is a vlf machine with Minelab's BBS technology.

The number of frequencies reported is just marketing. The Infinium is a PI which is supposed to have a large number of frequencies. The Excalibur is a VLF multi-frequency machine with Minelabs BBS technology similar to the Sovereign.
The Excalibur can offer target ID circuitry which PIs do not possess. However, although PIs have no real effective discrimination they do offer a depth advantage of VLFs at the beach.
Have you looked at the Goldquest aquasearch?

Thanks for your help, George and Eric.. To my understanding I thought anything offering multiple frequencies was a PI unit, I didn't realize VLF can be multi as well. I thought all VLF's sent out a continuous wave rather than the pulsing.
So I wonder how a VLF can do a multiple frequency while being a continuous wave ,must be similar to like multi tasking and all frequencies run continuously at once. Wish I was an electrical engineer so I could understand how it all works. <img src="/metal/html/smile.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":)">
So when a single freq detector hits a heavily mineralized area does it constantly chatter or is it just silent not able to pick anything up? I know these questions sound dumb but they were determine what I eventually buy. And I guess PI units then have no tonal change as to what its detecting since they lose their targeting ID and discrimination.
I have seen the Goldquest on here, looks like a pretty nice custom unit but I am looking for something more on the lines for both land and water. Just because I would the wife to get involved and if we both want to search on land then we would have 2 detectors capable of doing that and yet one to go in the water while she is hunting the dry stuff.
But I am in no rush and going to get educated about this hobby so I understand how to use them correctly.

I had them both. The Excal runs smoother in salt water. The infinium is ok in the wet salt sand but is still alittle niosy.I don't know how the infinium runs in fresh water.I would quess smooth.I like the way the infinuim works but I would not use it in the water.Check www.akmining.com for info on the infinuim.Steve gives a good overview of this machine.Good hunting,Joe
