I got it figured out. Fisher left the backlight on so it can shine on a little photo cell inside behind the faceplate and keep the unit recharging even when it's on. Brilliant!

My Alkies dropped one bar, so I popped them into my 4 cell camera charger (200mA) for a couple of hours. They've been working for at least 10 hours since....4 bars full and still going strong......
Two months on, and they're still producing maximum poke.
I reckon the LEDs act as solar cells during the daytime !!!!!
