Hello,
I'm trying to find a good metal detector, but I'm having problems making a decision because everyone says theirs is the best. I'm looking for one that I can dive with, use in the surf and on the beach. I was told that the Aquapulse was the best and then later was told that it wouldn't find small gold jewelery like a ladies diamond ring.
Is that true? if it is, than the aquapulse does me no good because most of my good finds are small gold jewelery. What about the Minelab Excaliber 1000? Can i find small gold and still get the same depth as the Aquapulse? What's the difference between pulse and vlf detectors? Which is better? and why? Why do most people i know have vlf? What would you use if you were me? I have a White's Spectrum XLT that I use now. No doubt that it's a descent machine(except in wet sand). Just not made for what I want to do with it. Please help me make a good decision this time. Thankyou very much.

As the designer of the Aquapulse, I can categorically tell you that it is not the best machine to use if you want to find small gold jewelry. That is not the purpose for which it was primarily designed. The same as your XLT is a good detector, but has limitations when used on a wet beach, because its primary application was for land searching.
There is often some overlap in the use of a detector in different environments. i.e. the Aquapulse can be used for beach searching, and a beach adapter kit was available, but it would be good at detecting only the larger and more conductive rings and coins.
It all comes back to the old saying

Reduced by how much in deeper water? What is the specification range of the Aquastar? The Aquapulse claims 15" for a lincoln head penny and 22" for a Spanish 'piece of eight', is that deep water or beach? Are you saying that one is better for beach and the other is better for diving? Which would you use for diving? Thanks for your help

Mr. Bill Crabtree is the distributor/dealer for Eric Foster's detectors in the <IMG SRC="/forums/images/flag.jpg" BORDER=0 ALT="USA">, and he will be able to help you. He also has an 800 number you can call, and you will find him to be most knowledgeable, and very helpful.
