Considering a X-Terra 705 and a couple ?s

Trying decide on my next detector and I'm thinking of trying a X-Terra 705. I like that it seems to be a multi-tasking machine that offers a lot of control. I've used Whites and Tesoro's in the past but Minelab would be completely new to me. From my reading the X-Terra seems like a heck of a detector. Couple of things I really like on Tesoro's are that they a light weight yet well built unit and have fast response and recovery speed. My question is how is the X-Terra's recovery speed? Also the X-terra is a light weight detector as well, is it a fairly solidly built unit? BTW, I'm in Central Ohio and coin/jewelry hunt parks and schools and also like to hunt plowed fields on our farms. Thanks in advance for any help in my decision making.

If you mean recovery speed as how long from the time that you think you have a coin, until it's pin-pointed with the detector and located in the ground, I think it does very very well. Of course some of that has to do with learning to use the detector.

I don't think that you can go wrong with the 705. With the stock 9" coil or the gold pack coil the detector, in my opinion, the detector is nice and light. I use the 10.5" coils most of the time and that definitely adds some weight that takes getting used to.

As for it being a solid built machine, I feel that it's just as solid and any other manufacturer. I detecting with someone using a Tesoro DeLeion this past weekend and I would say that it's build wasn't any different in comparison.

Hope this helps.

Mapper, thanks for the info. I guess what I mean on response is that my Tesoro's sound off quickly when the target is directly under the coil and reset quickly and are ready for the next target. Can easily pinpoint just by X-ing and work good in trash. An Ace 250 I tried once seemed like it wouldn't give an audio response until you had already swung about 8" past the target. Drove me crazy. Wanting to move to a unit that also offers tid and more user control.
Thanks Mike

OhioMike, recovery time is not as fast as a Fisher, but probably near the Tesoro.
I hit a coin spill and my 705 sounded like a caliopie, so I figure recovery is fast enough. My soil isn't too different from yours, and the stock coil is a good all purpose coil. I'm finding that the 10.5" HF DD coil is a super relic hunter as well as a gold killer. I've heard that the 6" DD is a great little setup, that's also considerably lighter than the larger coil, keeping weight minimal.

I haven't tried the LF coil yet, but one is in my near future. I'm hoping that it will give me a slight depth advantage on silver in already hard hunted areas.

I find the X-TERRA to be lightweight, well balanced and very well built. Some of the X-TERRA functionality that I consider to be important, compared to the Tesoro TID detectors, would be a full range of notch discrimination, Ground balance in both All Metal and Discrimination Patterns, Tracking and Tracking GB offset, Noise Cancel, Sizing Pinpoint and coil frequency variables. As far as response time between targets is concerned, strap on the 6-inch DD coil for coin/jewelry hunting in your parks and schools and I think you will be very impressed with depth of detection, target ID, Sensitivity and target separation. When I go to the farm fields, I prefer to start the hunt with my 9-inch concentric at 3 kHz. It is a silver coin killer. When I get into an area that has an abundance of trash and/or multiple targets, the smaller DD is my "go to" coil. JMHO HH Randy

I have to agree with Old Longhair. I ran across a pocket spill last night and I could easily tell that there was a quarter, dime and nickel all in about a 8" area. The impressive part was that was with a 10.5" coil.

I've never had any reason to be concerned about the recovery time on the 705. If there are detectors out there that are faster than the 705, I'm not sure that it would be a measurable difference.

Ok, thanks guys. Thats what I was hoping to hear.
Mike

Another interesting aspect of the 705 is that the frequency is controlled by the selection of the coil type, this I have found gives a very good Target hard sound, more so than the tesoros. Of course the draw back is that to change frequencys you have to change the coil. I purchased mine to hunt for gold because of the manual ground balance and It's great handling in hot ground, it is a very good coin shooter is light and is easy on batteries.

I am not familiar with the Tesoro but frankly cannot imagine hunting without a display screen but that is just me. I started with a Garrett 250 and liked it but did not find any silver or older coins after a year. I switched to the 705 and have now found 7 silver dimes and 11 Indians dating as far back as 1865. I am really sold on the 705 and would not part with it for any other detector.
