Couple of trips kayaking down the Knik River in Alaska~ temperature - 22 degrees below zero..

This kayak trip down the Knik river was about 22 years ago, and I mean to tell you it was cold. Ice was forming on the river in twirling rings, as seen in the photo. The picture above is Sharon's sister Anna about to disappear into the foreboding fog.

This is Sharon and I, we'd been married about 2 years. It has to be pretty cold for me to put a face mask on. The Knik River was explored by Lieutenant Bly serving under Captain Cook on a exploratory expedition of the Alaskan coast. Lt. Bly, of course, went on to become the famous Captain Bly of the Bounty. Here we have pulled the kayaks over probably to cook some Beanie Weanies and take a rest.

This is me walking across a frozen island, hoar frost on the trees, and the snow on the ground so cold it squeaked when you walked on it.

This is Sharon and I again, but this was a different trip, not quite as cold. As you can see, the river is frozen all the way across; all of the white snow you see is frozen river. We're just going down the open lead that wasn't frozen.

Sunset on another kayak trip. We didn't make it in before dark. We also used to moose hunt this river on the islands that it meandered through. Thanks for looking.

The headwaters of the Knik come off the Kink Glacier and flow 25 mile to the inlet on the north side of Anhorage. Sometimes we would camp for the night on one of the small islands and hunt moose.
