Crazy Cross

TURNMASTER

Active member
Yesterday I stopped at the dentists office and asked if I could hunt the house next door. Yes.

I thought I had a Silver hersheys kiss but it is plated. I did hit a 1954 Rosie and a few Wheats, also a '56 Canadian and a 47 Canadian today along with 4 more Wheats. The find of the week though is the really cool cross. I am not sure, but I think it is what is called a Papal Badge. Pope Leo XIII reigned from 1878 to 1903, so I am hoping it is that old. The big problem is that it is broke. I did go back and look for the missing piece but no luck.

If anybody knows what it is for sure please do tell.

I am guessing being it has the two dates on it, it was made after 1903. It is also likely that they were made for a while after 1903. As in a commorative piece. They still make Catholic pendants that say 1831 on them. I like the old car too!

Yeah the car is missing one wheel. I so thought I had finally found a complete one, well I have found another complete one but this one is pretty old and stylish.

The pendant has no dates on it that I saw. Check that, (I just looked again) it does have MCM and that would be 1900 I think. The dates I listed were the years Leo XIII was pope.

Ron, I should have known that you might be the guy who had the info. You seem to have the know how to dig out the history of different items.

It appears to be solid Silver and made from several different pieces. The 3 small crosses (there should be 4) look to have been soldered on as do the 2 large round circular pictures in the center on either side. So in all I think there wold be a total of 7 pieces making up a complete pendant.

Congrats on the silver and great finds! May God Bless! Amen! Ma Betty

I Jeff; The item you found is called an "ENCOLPIA". It is made of Brass. It was issued by Pope Leo XIII in 1900 and given to various Seminaries that were established by His Holiness. Pope Leo was instrumental in establishing more seminaries than any other Pope worldwide because he felt that the Word of God was not being spread as well as it should be due to a shortage of Seminaries and Priests worldwide. That the Church needed to reach out far more hence he began the building of these Seminaries. Your piece would have been given to the Monsignor in Charge as a sign of DIRECT Blessings from the Pope, The coins commemorate the Stations of the Cross and symbolize piety. Pope Leo first began issuing these in 1891. They were not given or sold to the General Public at all but smaller copies were rather given each Seminarian. Yours has to have been lost by a Seminarian. There is NO other possibility. That Seminarian must have been heart broken to have lost that piece as it was considered a direct gift to him from the Pope himself. Suggestion : Contact the local Seminary. Ask them for a list of all the Seminarians who worked there around 1899 - 1903. The Seminarian would have been required to report its loss to the Monsignor who would then request a new one from the Vatican. It had to be consecrated at the Vatican by the Pope in order for it to be properly Sanctified. To accept another piece without it being properly Sanctified would have been an act of Sacrilege. For you to hold onto it would be considered
"Sanctimonious" which although it is not a sin would be frowned upon by the Catholic Church. Please return it so that it can be properly sanctified and restored to its rightful place in the Seminary itself and the Church overall ok. I hope this helps. Until later; PEACE:RONB

I bet you did not realize just how important a piece that was.!!!!!!!

Hi Jeff; Pope Leo XIII was born March 2nd 1810 and died February 1903. He was also instrumental in incorporating the Kbights of Columbus into the Catholic Church in 1898 ok. PEACE:RONB

Man very cool

Thanks Ron

The only thing is... I am pretty sure it is Silver, or plated VERY heavily. I will contact the local montisory and see if I can find a next of kin.... Is that posible, or would the owner have been celibate.

I do not fall in to the whole tradition thing that the Catholic church follows, but it would be cool to see it go to its rightfull place in the world.

No Debates Here about Catholisism please.
Jeff

HI Jeff; Just contact the Church closest to you and ask for any Priest there. They can put you in touch with the right "Rectory". It may take a few weeks ok.The owner would NOT have any immediate family members but would have extended family members. Another words Relatives. The Church can put you in touch with them if any are still alive ok. Yes he would have been celibate.. He was called a "Seminarian". Yes I did read that some examples were silver plated. I had to double check on that one ok. There were no solid silver ones ever commisioned by the Pope.
Glad to help. Let us know ok. Thanks. PEACE:RONB

Well I have found out a little more, I think. As with all things to be found on the"WWW" I will not hold my breath but I think the info may hold true.

As it turns out this medalian came from Jerusalem. You could get one if you went there and had a letter from your pastor. Bronze 1st trip Silver 2nd trip and Gold for the 3rd. To bad this person had not gone 3 times. LOL. I may go to Gonzaga University and see if they have any more info on these items,

Here is a link with the info on the Cross of Jerusalem.
