crown caps:cheekkiss:

Other than a 46 Id not really sure. I dig them anyway because others have found silver at this number.

Part of what will help us help you to delineate crown caps from good targets, is by first letting us know what frequency you're hunting with when you have this issue. Response is very different using a 3kHz coil than when you have an 18.75kHz coil mounted.

this is randall again i am using a minelab 10.5 dd 7.5 freq and 4 tones. i trouble am having trouble telling coins from caps.

Hi randall, I think I might be able to help you to tell the difference between the rusty bottle caps "crown caps" and a quarter when using the 10.5 DD 7.5 coil which was my favorite coil for about 10 years.

if your running in All Metal "AM" and come across a quarter signal here's what you need to do. wiggle the coil over the target and pull the coil back towards you real slow and watch your numbers real close. Right at about the time the tones stop you will see the numbers drop down to a "-" Neg number and then real quick do back up to the number you started at and you will hear a real faint iron grunt. everything will happen real fast. You will see that Neg number for just a split second and you might not even hear the iron grunt but those numbers will take a dive and go right back up to where it was before the tones stopped. When you see that, most of the time it's going to be a rusty bottle cap........ If the numbers only drop down in to the mid 30's or not at all,,,,, Dig it, most times it's coin.

Now if your in pattern 1 mode, the split second before the tones stop the numbers will drop down in to the upper 20's and lower and then jump right back up, most times it's going to be a rusty bottle cap.

Also that's a good way to PP your target. When the tone stoppes the target will be at the top center of the outer edge of the coil.

1 other tip, you can do the same thing to tell the difference between a smashed Aluminum can and a half dollar. in AM aluminum will always give a iron grunt the split second before the tones stop and the numbers will always dive down and jump back up. If it's a coin in the hole with out a piece of iron "nail"
real close to it then the tones and numbers stay good.

I hope this helps you and any other person that uses the Xterra with the 10.5 DD 7.5 coil

It's been my experience that AM and 99 tones makes hearing the difference between rusty crown caps and coins easier. Coins will almost always be a clean clear sounding response unless there is trash in the hole, while trash is seldomly as clean sounding. Nearly new not rusted caps tend to be shallow, clean, and loud, making them very tough to distinguish from recently dropped quarters.
