cuts in beach

briley59

New member
I am new to the sport and area and hear about cuts and looking in them for items. I found an area of the beach today where the water was murky at the shore and clear and them murky again about 30 yards out. All this was on low tide and it appears to be a "cut" with deeper water in between two shallow areas. Is this the "cut" I am looking for. The whole area has been very sandy for almost two weeks. Any assistance would be appreciated.

Probably should have told I am in Florida for some to know what area and type of beach we are discussing here.

what beach where,as I'm in Fla too
but a cut is on the beach and a trough is in the water, cuts are caused by beach erosion after a storm, you ll want to hunt those really well,as for the troughs when you find those do the same and hunt those really well too..
hope this helps..

Jensen and yes it does help. I am from Ga originally and even though the weather is great here it is still too cold for me to go swimming. So the trough is worth hitting during the low tide in AM?

Yes definitely! When you find a trough or a depression in which sand has been removed, very often it will yield older heavier objects that have been covered in sand for a while. The best troughs will be near where the people have been for the longest time (over a period of years) .Give it a go and here hoping for some good luck for you!

That is my understanding. I have hunted many wet sand areas below cuts/banks but have yet to hunt a trough. I believe a trough is caused by underwater currents that remove loose sand allowing one to get to heavier targets(coins and jewelry) that would normally be to deep to detect. Is that about right John? Thanks!

Thanks I guess Ga boy is getting wet tomorrow then and it is still cold to me. i have watched this start as a very small trough about one foot across to 30-40 yards wide with a pretty sharp drop on the beach side into one to two foot water and then shallows again further out

I have been doing this for two weeks and have been fairly lucky. There was major cut on the beach first week and this yielded two rings and several earings and a couple of pendents. I found one cross and I cannot decide if it is old our just a cheap cross. It came from a 6-7' deep cut in the beach and could be very old I will find out one day.
Thanks for the help

get you a wet suit...or some waders....there not to expensive..check at bass pro shop or a sporting goods store..that water is to damn cold for me..
good luck let us know how you do..
john

Thanks John, I actually brought my duck hunting waders last time I was at house in Ga for that very reason. Thought may have a need for them.

well trough ended up sand heavy and with waves was impossible to maintain balance in soft sand and waves breaking on me. It yeilded on very large shell for my wife.

Hi Folks; A trick I've used is that when you are looking for a ring in a large cut. Take a piece of paper and draw a vertical line, assign a hieght number to it then draw a sloped line for the cut and assign a "length" of slope number to it.This will give you a side view picture of the cut. Then you can see where the cut "hieght" was before and now as well. This picture may open your eyes in a way no one else thought of before. If the ring was lost 2 years ago then figure out where the sand was then. You can then get a clearer picture of the flow pattern of the sand to possibly get closer to the ring itself. If it is still there.Anyway, regardless of what your detectors signal sounds like "DIG IT". Gold rings are masked by to many things causing it to be passed off as trash. I'd rather be safe than sorry right? Anyway good luck and let us know how you do. PEACE:RONB :yikes:

Thanks Ron i will have to put my math hat on for that one. I dig everything and it has come in handy. I gold nugget ring my first week behind two other detectors working in front of me. It was buried about 2" deep. They also missed several coins and earings in the mad attempt to cover everything in front of me. I am new to the game and go very slow and make sure all swings lap. Occasionally when returning to parking area I will get fast and cut down swings and pick up a coin or piece of trash. My thing is when the MD gives any kind of reading other than normal tone. Put your hands on it and rule out what it could be. I have uncovered a lounge chair 2.5 feet deep and a metal shelf at about three just satisfying my curiosity. I purchased a whites 300 as the only dealer in areas carried them and have been very satisfied so far. I am learning and it really did not make much difference which one I chose to begin with. I really look forward to getting on beach each day.

I,m assuming that you use the Whites BHID 300 if so Gobble Gobble that post on here has a setting to increase that detector depth
Maximum OverdriveBHID (Supertune )

Hi briley59; Flat out.!!! What Whites 300, Is it the newest Whites Vesna 300. If so you are now in "God" country detecting wise. You will "NEVER" need to buy another detector fort he rest of your life and your sons life or his sons life either.Detectors today are scary to the point I'm afraid we are going to get to a technilogical standpoint in detecting abilities that we will definitely lose what it meaens to be a treasure "HUNTER". These detectors will not only give a 3D image of what's in the ground. They'll probably do the digging for you and find dimes at 10 feet solid. I'm cringing. I'm really beginning to hate William Shattner. He did a show called Star Treck and now its all coming true. I say we go back to using diviming rods. That will teach them; the rats. !!!!!!! Lets revolt.!!! What do you guys say???? PEACE:RONB
:help: :surrender: :stars:  :goodnight:

No it is the BH300 and not the one you descibed. i am trying to find the article mentioned on settings for the unit in old forum without much luck. You would not know Gooble Gooble by chance or his advise. I am playing with the new toy and just watched the video on how to operate. Other than that and listening to the thing I know nothing about it. It does what it is suppose to.

Hi Brilet59; Thanks. I understand now. I usee an old Whites Surfmaster Amphibian. Old but good machine.Works great for me. Anyway thanks.PEACE:RONB
