Fisher will never duplicate the CZ architecture in a lightweight digital platform and the CZ ergonomics tire me more and more as I pile up the years. Has anyone ever redesigned the layout of the control box, maybe using a different shaft, to make it easier to swing?

Duplicate the CZ architecture - no, probably not. That sort of analog detector circuitry is obsolete.

Will they surpass the CZ with new multi frequency technology? Quite possibly. Lots of top detector engineers, including the legendary Dave Johnson, are busy in El Paso and They have publicly stated that their goal is totally new detector technology. Let's wish them luck!
 
Dave and Co need to get it in gear as the new CZ was promised by the end of 2016. I still have 2 CZ3Ds I can't bring myself to let go, but I have moved on as to what I grab to hunt. A killer new CZ would be oh so tempting, but smelling it in the wind is not enough. I have to see it, caress it and wrap my fingers around it and swing to the beep. Humm, am I getting a little too caught up in this? :detecting::wiggle:
 
Couple of aspects as used every CZ model ever made...and also duplicates on the way since my original CZ6 in 91....
CZ7 and CZ7A were rod mount only with excellent ergonomics although a tad heavy.
You could also body or chest mount the other models.
One fellow mounted the box under the armcup which really helped but have to hunt by audio....as can't see meter.
Last but not least don't hold your breath on a new model understand less profit for company and lets face it...old technology at its finest...

I would love to see Fisher build a lighter CZ and mount it on a F75/T2 style rod, equip it with a digital VDI and use both concentric AND double D coils. No doubt at this point they would have to go with an all digital platform to keep the costs down, which would probably change the machine's disposition somewhat, but for me the compromise would be worth it. I'm still holding out hope for a new CZ but not putting any faith in the rumors that seem to pop up every year or two and then quietly fade into the background.
 
It's not just obsolete; it's different. The analog circuitry as Fisher designed it is inherently less EMI prone compared to their digital platforms.
 
Hi all:

The 2nd link (listed above) shows pictures of the mod that I did for one of my CZ-3Ds a few years back. I hated the S handle on the 3D so I purchased a 1270 S Rod/T-Handle assembly from Fisher (don't know if they're still available), fashioned a bracket and mounted the 3D control box on the T- Handle. The following is what I wrote about the mod on the Alterations forum describing the end results:

I have always been a fan of Fisher metal detectors starting with the 1200X series of machines. Back in the early 80s Fisher led the way by introducing these high performance, light weight, very well balanced machines with their S Rod/T handle design. Fast forward to the CZ series (still rather light weight, cutting edge/dual frequency) machines but now they were using an S rod/handle configuration which I found to be far inferior in terms of balance/feel to the earlier design (especially with the larger coil (i.e. 10.5 inch). When I purchased my CZ3D, I hated the feel/balance with the 8 in coil and when I mounted the larger 10.5 inch coil, I found it to be intolerable. So I purchased a Fisher Model 1270 S Rod with the T handle, fashioned a bracket to mount the CZ3D control box on top of the T handle, like the 1200x series. Wow what a difference (especially with the larger coil), like old times with my 1200x machines. My CZ3D, now has a totally new/different (very comfortable) balance, feel and character. What a joy to use with the new configuration.

...What type of cover do you use covering the control box when resting on the ground.
 
resigning the entire shaft right now. Should be done in a week or so. When I hacked the shaft to pieces I couldn't believe the weight in it. I think when I'm done I will weigh the old shaft with detector compared to my new 1.
 
Completed a CZ3-D mod a few years ago, was a nightmare but luckily the second attempt went off without issues. First one shaft snapped near the hand grip, that was due to excessive drilling to fit in all the wiring going to meter panel above handle.

Since, I've added a rare elliptical DD coil, The meter assembly is from a CZ6 I believe, been so long I'll need to check my notes to confirm.

I'll post update pics in the near future, been off line for awhile. Look's like it's straight off the Fisher assembly line, truly one of a kind.
