Damaged Cz-20: Salvageable by myself?

there's this guy who got a used CZ-20 for 400 last year... the first time he took it for wading it took a dump and stopped working - was quoted 375 est for a repair. Apparently it will turn on and do a battery test - turning the disc knob makes it give a little "beep". Anyone knows what is wrong with it, and if I can fix it DIY? If I can get it for 100 I might just want to try - if it works that would be a steal :bouncy:

I'm going to take a wild guess that the quote would end up having the CZ-20 guts and front panel swapped for a CZ-21 guts and front panel with a new serial number assigned. And without a good schematic, some experience on a CZ and a good parts supply of old parts that probably are not currently made, you would not have a very good chance of fixing it DIY.
Just my 2 cents.
Cheers,
tvr

Edited to add a PS: I'd guess the $100 price is close to what the coil may be worth ... but then it is a used coil and not a new one.

Unless it's totally trashed, for $100 it might be worth getting it and sending it in to Fisher yourself. For the other $300-$400 repair cost you'll have a factory tested/certified CZ21 (add another $100-$200 if the coil or headphone's bad). Considering a brand new CZ21 is in the $1100-$1200 range, I'd definitely give it a thought.

If you can get it for $100, you already know the quoted price of $375 for the fix which would make it a CZ21. That's $475 for a like new CZ21....not a bad deal.

As long as the headphones and coil work and the cable looks good, it would seem FT would only have to replace the guts and face plate.

This seems like a pretty safe bet. There is a chance it just needs to be dried out fully and resealed. If it was in salt water it needed to be rinsed in distilled water immediately and may be too late to prevent corrosion. You could try to old dry rice pack trick and if all else fails send it to El Paso. I believe you would easily get back your investment reselling it if you didn't like the finished CZ-20/21.

Yeah, thats mine and I still got it...I thought I'd come up with the 400 to fix, (without getting caught by the wife) but not yet, maybe after taxes?.....there was no water inside the battery compartment OR the main guts, (I opened it up and had a look for something simple), so I think its the disc pot, (maybe the pp button, but I never pressed that either) the coil was running just fine before I submerged the control box, so the first 200 takes it! I cant go 100, I may be stupid, but only half crazy!
So I get half my money back, and somebody gets a @600 dollar CZ21.

thanks for dropping by mudpuppy, i was thinking of writing you a msg on ur thread by tomorrow... still can't PM yet :( just a wild guess here - could it be a loose connection or something? U might be able to fix it urself even.

main point is that i'm thinking of getting a back-up detector in a few mths time and thought it might be a good idea to tinker around a half-dead cz-20. at the risk of sounding severely uninformed, what's the discrimination "pot"? I've heard issues regarding the pinpoint button on the cz-20... apparently there are ppl who epoxy over it just in case.

say... if I happen to get the funds for it, will you ship to Singapore? and how much is it, if the CZ-20 is packed as compact as possible?

no man, sorry, I cant ship to Singapore...The disc pot allows a person to run in all metal, or discriminate out signals, its really the only knob I was fooling with much in the water.
I used to be good at fixing things, but I cant see squat anymore and get frustrated around ittle stuff!

ahh that's a pity then. There's still a way via freight forwarding but that would cost too much and ain't economical. Anyway good luck with selling it, someone will want it, 600 for a new CZ-21 isn't bad at all!
