Got permission to search the yard of an early 20s home. Was hoping to break my no silver quarter streak. I searched for 2 1/2 hours and the only old coin found was 1943 merc. I did find a small handful of modern coins, just nothing old.
I was getting good signals with the 705, but I think they are deeper than my 9" screwdriver. It took some sweet talking to get permission, so no plugs this time. I did tell the owner that I thought they were deep and didn't come prepared for plugs this time. I didn't get a NO about a return visit.

Still nice finding the 1943 merc! I'm sure there is more good stuff waiting there for ay Bill! I guess I'm gonna need to start getting permission as well. At an old school yesterday, I found a 1951 wheat, 1960 nickel and 1967 quarter, I was sure there was some silver here too, but nothing so far. Now that you have some time on them, how do you like the earbuds?

Scott,
I wish I hadn't given the seller his money back. They started acting up on me yesterday. Only getting sound from one side. Oh well, I tried to do the right thing. When I repair them I am going to make the cords long enough to put the receiver in a front pocket. The behind the neck thing started bugging me.
The owner of this house has lived there for20+ years so I know it hasn't been detected since she bought it. It was just too strange to not find anything old but the one coin.

Bill, their is nothing strange about only finding one old coin at the place. I've done 100's of old yards and a lot of them I was lucky to have found 1 wheat. Just because it's a old yard does not mean that their will be old coins there. Some times the couple did not have kids or the kids did not play in the yard or they did not give their kids any money and a lot of other reasons why their is not any old coins in a yard to be found.

if you feel you worked it pretty good,,, move on to the next place. I do not waste my time on non productive places...

Mark, I'm going back sometime, only next time I will do plugs. I was getting good signals with good numbers and I feel that maybe they were beyond my reach with the screwdriver. The soil at this house is so deep and soft, very few small stones, etc.
Most places I hunt have a gravel layer 5-7" below the top soil because we are over an old river bed. I didn't find that here.
But you are right, this may not have had a family living here.
Thanks for the input.

Mark you make me feel a little better. I have been at so many old home sites and found nothing of interest, or many times coming home skunked. I keep going at it as I have found some old coins and cool relics at old home sites. It does get very frustrating though, especially after reading about all the silver coin finds, etc... on this site.

Scott, All of us that post our finds on here do not talk about all the bad places, lol. Just the good hunts.

Me and another guy that MD's alot, have talked about old yards and we figure 1 out 10 yards will be a good one.

That's amazing to me. I've never experienced that before this house. Always had good luck at older homes.

Mark has is right. We typically only post the good stuff and we've had some old home sites turn up nothing. We went to one about two years ago and as soon as I got out of the car and saw this place I "knew" we would find some good stuff. I found a wheat a few feet from the driveway and absolutely nothing else!

Another place we literally hunted hard for 2 years with a fair amount of coins but only a silver or three. On the 3rd year we found a few indians a couple of V nickels and a barber dime. During the second year we thought we had the place hunted out with the handful of wheats that we found but that 3rd year we had a hot streak over a couple of weeks.

So much can change your luck. I really like hunting a place right after a decent rain. It seems to give you better conductivity and you'll find coins that you missed when it was more dry.

Don't give up!

Mapper,
I don't give up so easily. I've been doing this for 40 years. I'm new to ML, but I love this machine.
I don't normally go out and ask for permission at old homes, my old home sites are abandoned or demolished so I may not have searched as many of these type of sites as you and Mark. I can't disagree with what you say.
HH.

Bill, the sites I hit normally have no indication a house was even there other than outcroppings of trees. Once I walk around, I may find some bricks, foundation concrete, etc... but NO structures or buildings remain. These sites can really suck as I feel it's a real shot in the dark. I usually head straight for the largest tree and start there.
