Daytona... *RANT*

Just got back from a trip to Daytona. Had the opportunity to get the Excal out for the first time in over a year. Not great finds, but I managed several dollars in clad, a SS spinner, a mood ring, junk sunglasses (why cant they ever be Maui Jim), and a few other costume items. I had the opportunity to meet a few other visitors to Daytona, who took the chance to get their detectors out for a little bit of hunting also. Everyone I met was courteous, and friendly. They filled their holes and did not crowd beachgoers. All the right things that help to preserve our "privilege" to detect. That was until my last day, when I had the chance to observe one detectorist who managed to violate all the rules of courtesy in one shot. I don't know if he is a regular in the area, or a visitor, but maybe he will recognize himself or someone here might know him and set him straight before his lack of consideration has consequences for all of us..... He was hunting out in front of the big resorts. I imagine, it would not take too many complaints from guests before our hobby suffered..... These were just a few of his holes, and is it really neccessary to get that close to people. If you absolutely "must" hunt that spot, come back to it when the people move on. Let this be a reminder to us all to "Do the right thing" ( withheld the headshots)

I agree with you about our hobby suffering

Metal detecting in the middle of the day on a crowdy beach will slowly put more and more resistance to our hobby.

I manage a Hotel by the beach, listening to the customer and to other hotel manager, daytime metal detecting start to irritates lost of peoples.

If you want to find me during the day, dont check on the beach. 4am to 8 am is the best time for me to enjoye my hobby.

We should tink seriously about it

man that sucks i"d go over & have a nice talk to him :argue: how hard is it to fill a hole.
looks like a pro with that shaft & scoop he should know better.

I don't know where you all are from ,but most guy;s in FLa. do not fill in there hole in the wet sand..If you ever watch a wet sand hole ,you see it fill it's self in rether fast. I know here if you dig a big hole and leave it ,some little kid just got lucky and is playing in it. One other thing you want to think about , to fill in a hole in the wet you have dig a nother hole.Digging a hole in wet sand is like digging a hole in fast meltting ice cream it hard to do because the hole keeps filling in on you.So have fun and remember all things are not what they seem to be. My daughter goes to Ventnor beach here in NJ and said there are guys that latterly go between beach towels (they have Excals.) in the dry sand she even took pictures to show me. Why not hit the wet sand? Why bother these people? With the competition, Md's are trying to get an advantage. I get out early in the moorings or after 6 pm. there are also allot joggers that run along the shore line and don't see the holes just at the line, all it will takes is one person to hurt themselves and I guarantee that they will ban MD during beach hours. Jerseys make laws for everything, don't give them a reason to make a new one, PLEASE!! . If you are a new person out there, please do the right thing. Going during the day is OK in wet sand or in areas where people are not side by side (YOU HAVE TO FILL THE HOLES!!!!!) the holes don't fill themselves fast enough as joggers and walkers are right behind you when you walk away. Don't get into people face, give people space. Please do the right thing. Thanks Crash for your post.

I always fill even in the close to shore wet (but I agree with Ron that they do fill themselves rather quickly). The reason I fill though is that one day I saw a guy on his beach cruiser bike eat it in a hole that some kinds had been making with plastic shovels in the wetsand. I like to give those guys and the joggers a fighting chance so I try to leave the beach exactly as I found it...except a little cleaner :p

Ratpack

During the day,( between beach towels ) it's there game, we should live them alone.

Early in the morning, when the city's employees doing the cleanup, the lounge chairs still lock, the homeless waking up... it's our game then

Couple resident at the beach i go, did trow 3 rolls of pennies on the sand, as a manifestation against MD.

There is at least 5 permanents day time MD were i go.And one of theme take big pleasure to go around Young Lady's towels...Shit Couple guys like this and we'll all pay for that one day

It's the can of guys ho wont lesson to anyone.

Ouffff OK I feel better now

Good day

As long as you dont have a detector in your hands you can drink beer and throw the labels, caps, tabs and empty's on the sand.
(even if there is a ban on alcohol)
Change diapers and throw the dirty one down on the sand for someone else to dispose of.
Cook a three course meal for a party of 10 and leave all the trash for someone else to clean up.
You can take a shovel and dig a hole as large and deep as you want and leave it for someone to fall into.
You can invade others space.

If you are the motel or condo you can stake out as much public beach with umbrellas, chairs, and tents as you want and leave them there all night.

But bring a metal detector and all that changes.

Bottom like is ... treat others with the same respect that you expect to be treated with.
Act as if the beach were private property and you are a guest.
Put the trash in your pouch ... not back in or on the sand.
Try to leave the beach looking as if you were never there.

Yeah yeah, most of us fill in our holes and he was setting a very bad example on that point. However... the beach does not belong to swimmers and sunbathers during ANY hours of the day. It is a public place and all have equal rights to it. I don't care when you choose to hunt! Some beaches get crowded, if I am hunting on such I can either give folks their space or I can let THEM give ME MINE. And that doesn't lessen my standing as a representative of the hobby. I don't see any offense in his proximity to those sitters BUT if he's oggling the girls on towels he needs to stop. The beach offers plenty of eyecandy without disturbing girls catching rays. You can choose to be as innocuous, courteous and harmless as you want to and there'll STILL be complainers about what we do. Screw them and those that want to kowtow to 'em. If you want to bend over for them, fine, less competition in the lane for me.
Happy hunting to all.

I agree with you guys, But they dont, The business whant theme for there money, not us.

We have to deal with that, it is a fact.

I disagree.... Firstly, the holes were not just in the wet sand. Second, I dug holes in the same part of the beach, and I had no problem pushing my sand back into the hole....And with respect to GaBeachsweeper, I disagree. Its one thing when people are on there feet and can avoid you, but if it was me sitting on the beach in the water with my child, I would have had a few unkind words for him, and for you if you came up that close to me while sitting down. Common courtesy and respect for others should prevail, regardless of what other people do on the beach. Unfortunately for us, regardless of our opinion, the public does not view our "rights" to the beach the same. Nor do public officials. From a legal standpoint, there is an accident, and there is recklessness. Some people, officials, and attorneys, could perceive a person wading thru a large crowd with a SS sand scoop over his shoulder as reckless and when you accidentally cause injury to someone, you could be finding yourself in a heap of trouble. Hope your insurance is good....

Crash, forget it. Some will get this and some wont no mater how you put it. Yes we have all the same rights but knowing how some people feel about us should make us all prove them wrong by simply doing the right thing, its not that hard, and being spiteful only adds fuel to the fire. I love this hobby and with the amount of Md's out there now we have to be mindful how the public perceives our hobby so some moron lawmaker limits or takes away our right to beach hunt. Id love not have to fill them damn holes every time but I know its the right thing to.

wow. Wow. Wow
this does make you think a bit
I too live in fla and I go hunting when my schedule does permit
I too hunt wet sand and dry sand and I try to fill in most holes I dig
and at the wet sand your hole is filled up as you pull your scooper out !!
But yes at the dry but still wet sand we all should try and fill in our holes
I'd feel really bad if domine got hurt cause of my own neglagence !
I've had nothing but great responses from people asking the usual
questions about metal detecting all been really positive..
But that can change, it'll only take 1 person who is in a position or
knows somone in a position to make our fun sport go sour really
quick .. Hence: if your a biker, the Myrtle beach newly changed laws !!
It can and has happened to all sports around..
So if we are not noticed we can continue to have fun..
Just my 2 cents worth
H H
good luck to all
John

the guy in the photo is probably not smart enough to fill in a hole- look at his coil -obviously not level coiled not level headed.

I push the same sand back in pack it once or twice with my scoope and move on....I saw just yesterday tots trying to learn how to walk on beach,I'am glad i filled my holes up its no trouble for me ......look around when you fill it in you will see some smiles or looks of appreciation.....eveyone has their own opinion
i would rather leave it as good or better myself
People allways ask questions.....what are you looking for or whats the best thing you've found.....whats that...etc.
its stress free treasure hunting ..... you never know what you will find...good luck hunting.

I fill my holes and what kinda got me into beach hunting was a way to pass time waiting for a pompano to bite... but why would someone swim around my lines when I go beaches less crowded to fish and I want privacy? Then complain when a hook is embedded in their flesh well what did ya think was gonna happen? I'm tired of being the life guard in the GENE POOL... be responsible for YOURSELF!!!!

I know, people will put themselves in harms way and you can get the brunt end of it. Its not always fare that's why sometimes you got to act as if your dealing with children. I love to surf fish (on the beach) and there are a only few beaches on Long Beach Island NJ beaches designated for fishing ONLY but believe it or not the swimmers will find there way around your line. I feel your pain. Like MD. you got your bone heads around you and sometimes you got to protect them from themselves.

Bottom line Boys,
Give the people their personal space as we like our space too.
Common sense at all times.
I would be pretty peeved off if someone came hunting around me and the family during that time of the day.
DONT hunt around the people that are there, ask them yourself if you tect around and I'm quite sure 80%
will tell you to take a hike.
We got a great hobby, don't destroy it.
HH and cheers
