DD 10" coil

I've read a number of comments about the 10" DD 705 coil at 18khz. There are 2 versions, a round, and an oval shape. Which of these two coils is preferable? What difference does it make? I'm guessing the oval is better pinpointing and separation of trash?

Differences I've found.......I get more depth out of the round 10" than the oval 6 X 10. And the HF round seems to be more sensitive than the MF round. As such, I always have to back off the Sens. setting when using the HF coils. The open spoke design of the round coil can get "hung up" when hunting in bean stubble or corn stalks. The oval coil is smooth bottom and glides across the ground (or sand) more easily. As to pinpointing and separation, since they are both DD and both the same "length", their pinpointing and separation characteristics are similar. However, since the amount of soil being analyzed by the round coil (at any given time) exceeds the amount of soil being analyzed by the oval (due to the difference in width), you may want to sweep the round coil a bit slower than the oval to maximize separation. Both are water resistant and not waterproof. The difference being how they respond to water pressure at given depths. I've not heard from anyone having a water issue, when using a water resistant coil. But if you plan to get it wet, I'd recommend putting a dab of sealant around the area where the cable enters the coil. And I also ran a bead of sealant around the perimeter of the coil cover, where it meets the coil. JMHO HH Randy

Great information..........I notice that the ads for both coils say "waterproof", instead of water resistant. I thought they were wrong. I suspect I will opt for the oval one since the hf is meant to get good separation anyway. thanks.........................

Digger,
Can you verify the round DD coil isn't waterproof. I was told by Kevin H. that he thought the round one was waterproof.

I know there has always been a lot of discussion about them. But here is a link to information received from Minelab Corporate.... http://www.findmall.com/read.php?55,1068029,1068029#msg-1068029

I contacted Minelab to get a better definition of which coils are waterproof and which ones are water resistant. I have encountered at least one owner of a 10 inch DD coil that ruined it in shallow water at a beach. Here is the reply I got from Minelab along with a link to a great page of definition for each coil:

There is actually a mixture of waterproof and water resistant coils in the X-TERRA range.
Probably best detailed in the Coil Selection Guide in the Knowledge Base Article section of the Minelab website: http://www.minelab.com/__files/f/11792/KBA_02-1_Coil_Selection_Guide.pdf

Either way we do everything we can to make the coils as watertight as possible but only coils filled with epoxy are listed as waterproof.

If a non-epoxy filled coil is submerged (e.g. DD oval coil) there is always a risk that a seal can leak, therefore we list them as water resistant.

Note: Many competitor companies claim their non-epoxy filled coils as waterproof!

I hope this answers your question?

Good hunting
