Johnny asked a question in regards to some pinpointing issues with the larger DD coil and the MXT. Several of us gave the usual techniques that seem to work. I asked my wife what SHE thought since she now uses that coil EXCLUSIVELY.
Shelley says we're ALL "nuts" and acting like typical men with our DD pinpointing theories and explanations. She says we are all just trying to be too technical and working way too hard. So, for you ladies reading out there or any open-minded guys...Here is her method which, I have to admit, she has gotten very quick and rather proficient with. So who am <BIG><STRONG>I</STRONG></BIG> to argue?!! <IMG SRC="/metal/html/blink.gif" BORDER=0 width=18 height=18 ALT="b~">

Shelley sweeps until she gets a repeatable target as we all do. However, instead of immediately going into pinpoint mode, she first backs up the coil 50% and sweeps just the front half over the suspected target. Then she quickly moves the coil forward and sweeps the back half of the coil over the target. Once she's certain of the axis she moves the coil COMPLETELY OFF the target to "clean" ground before turning on the VCO (pulling the trigger) to pinpoint. This seems, to her, to greatly enhance the tracking of the coil and machine in finding the exact location of her find. At that point she merely brings the coil back over the known target axis until she gets the shallowest reading possible. This whole search and locate procedure takes her less than eight seconds to complete (I've actually timed her several times) <img src="/metal/html/smile.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt="
"> and she's now ready to dig. When she finally does dig for the target she goes DIRECTLY UNDER the shaft & coil hinge attachment.
<SMALL><BLOCKQUOTE>(Note: This takes her a bit longer if she's dealing with a deeper "whisper" target but the steps are the same...just more slowly and sometimes repeated.)</BLOCKQUOTE></SMALL>
She agrees with most of us in that the DD is NOT very reliable for depths less than 4 inches or so but this fact has no effect whatsoever on her recoveries. In fact, it made her FASTER! Unless it's a surface target (.5 inches or less) she automatically digs a quick 4 inch plug and then checks the plug and then the hole to see where it still is. She's VERY quick at this whole procedure, believe ME!
The DD is now her ONLY coil and she really loves it. She's told me not to expect to ever get it back. So if you see one for sale, let me know. LOL <img src="/metal/html/biggrin.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt="

She usually keeps her AC Sens at a setting of +1. Shelley has come to prefer setting her discrimination slightly more toward the "nail than the nickel on the dial" (HER words, not mine). She hits more trash but never misses a nickel which comes in sharp and clear and keeps her "happy"!
Hope this has been of help or at least some interest to you.
