Deepest Coin Yet with Omega

RLOH

Well-known member
I am constantly stewing about whether or not I will miss a deep coin with my Omega because of the weak audio. Today I went to a park where my deepest coins ever were in the 8 to 9 inch range. I found a silver dime here a couple of weeks back that was about 7 inches deep. The high tone on that coin was barely audible, but it was a slight high pitched whine. It's hard to explain what I am hearing, but it is not a tick or whisp of a signal. I run into troulble trying to remember or figure out a deep coin signal because they don't happen as much as I would like them to. On a deep coin I will listen for this quick high pitched whine and look for numbers that match a coin. I am getting a 82 -84 number that sometimes repeats on these deep coins. Today, I got a faint(and I mean faint) high tone, along with some 84 numbers. There were also some mid and low tones within a couple of inches. I could isolate the high tone and I had a feeling that there was a good coin in the mess. I first found a square tab at about 5 inches and when I stuck in the Pistol probe, I got a deeper signal. From 8 to 9 inches comes a very nice 1943 merc. I re swept the hole and got an iron grunt about 4 inches off to the side. I have no doubt the iron and tab were masking the merc. I am very pleased with how the Omega with the 11 inch dd coil can find coins with trash nearby. I am also starting to be more confident in recognizing a deep signal. After experimenting with the sensitivity settings for the last 6 hours or so, I have found it imperitive to run the sens as high as you can in order to find coins over 8 inches deep. My settings today: ground balance 59, sens 81, disc 15, three tones. R.L.

Good job, that's what I have tried to tell a lot of people on this forum but most don't want to turn the Omega up they are afraid they might here some noise, this is why I don't report any of my finds, Everyone wants to know your settings you tell them wide open sens, then someone will come along and say you don't need the DD coil to get maximum depth and some say to hold your coil 2 inches above the ground and this is why I am tired of trying to help people because someone always tells people to use the stock coil and sweep 2 inches above the ground, I think this is why I see a lot of used Omega's for sell after just a few day's to a few weeks, Anyway I am glad you have figured out how to get maximum depth out of the Omega, By the way you might want to try different headphones I have several sets that are too quiet on the omega, for what it worth I use I pod ear buds with adjustable volume , you can run volume wherever you need to you can get them at wall-mart $26.00 with my ear buds I have no trouble hearing the deep signals.
