In talking with some friends I located what I think to be a real good place to detect, it's an old one room school house. So I went to the owners place right next door, the wife answered and I got denied access. Any tips on how to get people to change their minds??
Man I know that would have been a great place too!!!

DO NOT TRY IT...... a similar thing happened to to me and a buddy about 6 yrs. ago....... the problem was is that he didnt warn me that this was his second time to go to these peoples property until he was knocking on their door...... the man came to the door and asked what he was doing back there after being told he was not allowing him to detect there... he asked us to wait a minute and went in the house and apparently called the police.... when he came back he was standing back at the door with a pistol that was cocked but not pointed at us and said if we moved he would shoot us both....... when i saw the police cars driving up to his property i immediately told him that he had not told me that he had been here before; i had no idea.... .......the police were there in about 4 - 5 minutes and was going to tell them that we were trespassing on his land and was going to have us arrested for doing so... i immediately informed him of 2 federal agents in my family and that if these cops arrested us there was no telling what would happen and also told him i have to call them immediately which i did...... i had them on the phone as these cops were getting out of the car and told i have a federal agent in my family who was on the phone that they have to speak with right now which one of the officers did....... after the call i told them i had no idea that he had already been there once and was denied and my friend told them this also.... they were ready to take him to jail but i asked them if they could just right him a ticket or warning instead which they agreed to.... if they had taken him to jail they would have confiscated his vehicle and i would have been stuck almost 100 miles from home....

I called the owner of a bar that has 3 volleyball courts behind it. The owner had a "for lease" sign up and that's the number I called. I asked him if I could hunt the sand VB courts and he turned me down. So I just waited until it was leased. I went in to have a beer and a sandwich. I then proceeded to help the owner hang a new net. Then I asked him if I could hunt? He said to go for it. I didn't find any jewelry but scooped about 100 coins. Maybe time will help you too. Wait until they pass away or move. Then ask again. Good luck.

PS. I was turned down 2 weeks ago after about 3 months of research. I located an old fair ground and horse race track that was active from about 1870 to 1905. It was huge! Through the historical society maps and pictures and satellite I located the track. It's a field now but you can still see most of the track from satellite photos. Right where the stands were is some property a friend (past friend) owns.
I asked him if I could hunt his house (which is vacant!) He said no. I'm waiting for the "rent" sign to go up. Then I'm going to rent it for 1 month and hunt it! That's what I'm waiting for.....

You got to have a place to hunt! this experience is the exception not the rule. I haven't ran into anyone that was nasty in 9 years, if you don't feel comfortable face to face-I know what you mean- I found writing them a nice letter will work especially if they have their house up for sale, you tell them what a shame it would be if they left something valuable in the ground etc, HELL BOY you got to think outside the box, this is the best hobby in the world, you gotta have spots. Above all be honest with the property owner as far as division of the finds go, I try to always have understanding up front. And
when you get done they shouldn't be able to tell that you were ever there. One thing will lead to another, if you work @ it, you will find many good spots.Good Luck.......

Why didn't the man get in trouble for brandishing a weapon or threatening to shoot you? You had no weapon or threatened his life. They can't illegally shoot you for trespassing.

Oh yea, to the first post, forget it and go on to the next place.

That's funny Kenny! If you really do it I hope you find enough to cover the rent.

To the original poster: As John suggested move onto the next site. Those old one room school houses always look so appealing but ask yourself why any kid back then would need to bring money to school. Relics are another story though. I hope the next site you pick is a good one!

in case you do not know TEXAS law you can shoot someone just for being on your property for NO REASON at all............ that is the law......

Have at least heard of instances of where "law" and "law enforcement" are two different things. A friend of mine was walking across the back of a property that he had permission to be on and and a nut case that was a friend of some local cops to say he had been trespassing on his property. the cops called mine friend to come to them. He came over wondering what was going on. They seen he had a hunting knife that was partially covered by his jacket and arrested him for a concealed weapon. His excuse the expression "attorney" advised him to plead guilty and take a short jail term instead of fighting it. He did, enough said.

This house and 5 acres couldn't pull more than 250.00 in rent.(piece of crap) In the old archives it was said that up to 3000 people gathered at every race. Plus the yearly carnivals and circus. His property is right where the stands once stood. I would pay him $250 to hunt the whole place. I think I'll offer him $100 right now!!!

Hey, this is a great post-I just realized how important diplomacy and tact are in acquiring a site. Also the need to maybe plan and wait for the opportune time to ask:thumbup:

I"d just find another spot to hunt B.
EARTHLINGX that's one scary story and wrong on so many levels. replace the two detectorists with boy scouts selling raffle tickets and who"d be going to jail then. if that"s the way the law works over there i"m glad i live in Australia!!!! mate i"d start wearing bullet proof vests if asking to detect around your area.

Hey aussie

If you ever get to NEW MEXICO go there.... i lived there for 5 yrs.... i can give you some hot spots where there are old ghost town ruins, silver mines, quite a bit of gold in the northern part of the state and other places..... i my yrs. of "tecting" it has always been my favorite

I dont think I could enjoy this hobby if I cant keep my finds, thats what keeps it interesting for me. I would find it hard to ask for permission to hunt someones yard just to give up everything I found to them if they wanted it. I would have to ask to hunt and keep my finds other wise I have better things to do with my time.If this would ever become the way it has to be ... to give up my finds that is, my detector would be up for sale in a minute. Now I have no problem with returning a class ring with some ones name or some type of ID on it or something of that nature but, the way I see it any property owner that I ask for permission to MD and they dont immediately ask me to locate something they lost, it becomes very clear to me they had no interest whatsoever what was in the ground before I came along, so.... I want to keep my finds. I read someones post that the state they lived in required them to turn in any valuables found on the beach and after a period of time, no one claims it ,its yours. How convenient for the one that receives these items and logs them for the state. I just wonder if anyone is actually contacting the state for their lost merchandise. Maybe I look at it all wrong but this is just my opinion about the hobby and Im sorry if I have offended anyone by it.

i know penny but think about it,

you may be hunting on someones land that has been in their family for a few generations and what is found on that land could also be their heritage of their family... usually when i have done similar things i am going to set it all in front of them and let them see it..... most of the time they didnt want anything BUT.. just think if you found some valuable ring that had been lost by a great great grandmother that was supposed to go to a grandchild or a son to hand down in their generations what would that be worth..... they might even give you a reward ....

Does that include in-laws? :)

only if their NOT originally from Texas........

In about 2 months i am going up to Amarillo, TX to try to "Tect" the area where my grandmothers family home stood from 1835 - 1960 until they moved into a more modern home on the same 800 acre ranch about 1/4 mile away... even though my dad sold the land and both home properties a long time ago i am still going to have to ask permission...... if they say no then oh well

Yeah, I'd say its a good bet that you'll find one or more coins, that by themselves are worth the price of admission.
